Normally, the ex-LNWR boxes had two bars where the windows opened and one bar when they didn't. Port Sunlight Sidings 24/6/1977.

attachicon.gif010 24-6-1977.jpg

...and Polesworth 22/71987.

attachicon.gifPolesworth 19870722 002.jpg

These are stunning photographs for me Mr FlyingSignalMan.

Polesworth shows the external walkways missing (no doubt health and safety - and a large drop onto the running lines!).

Port Sunlight Sidings is, well, mana. (drool drool...)

It is a full wooden cabin - like my current build.

It shows the type 4 size K brilliantly - I'm modelling a type 4 size J.

It shows great locking room door detail fabulously.

The Cabin room floor is quite high at 10 to 12' above rail height.

Guttering fixings spacings detail is shown.

The Locking room windows are VERY tall.

The Cabin's name board is not fixed directly to cabin.

The cladding - for such a long box - is still very uniform (unlike, say Greenfield).

...but the piece de resistance is the decorative facia board half way up the cabin separating the Locking room and the main Signal Cabin.

There is a piece missing (nearest corner) which allows you to see the construction underneath. Also, from this, you can infer where the cross beams were just below this - the bolts are visible.

I will have to visit my plans again but this is brilliant - thank you both. (changing plans is better than changing finished models!)

There is loads of other detail too.

Is that a Webb 15+15+15 frame - I don't know as Port Sunlight Jn. is no listed in my 4 books?

What I have learnt about LNWR Type4 Boxes is that there are so many differences on a standard theme that you can pretty much do what you want and it will still be "Proto-typical!".

Kev.

(the more I look, the more I see - thanks again...)

Thanks so much for posting your photos, I was born in the North West, but having lived in Canada so long, I have to resort to maps to familiarize myself with where some of these places are actually located.

When I first posted a poor quality version of this it seemed to get DMU fans excited so can anyone add anything more please ?

Another set of fantastic photos, thanks for sharing. Quick question, in DAS000201 (the rear shot of Frodsham Junction Up Main Home 1) do you know what the white disc is for - is it connected to the arm repeater link?

Regards, Ian.

Yes - its the contact box, so when the arm moves it makes / breaks the circuit. That one is LMS

Thanks Beast. Although I've climbed a few mechanical signals in my early railway career, I've not come across the disc arrangement before. But if it was an LMS practice then not surprising it escaped me as my signal climbing days were on the ER.

Once again, many thanks.

Regards, Ian.

The likes I see as an indication people are looking at the thread.

Personally I "like" posts from other people to acknowledge the posting - for example Dave has a fantastic thread going and I like each of his photo posts, not all are of major interest to me, but I know he's taken time and effort to post it, so I acknowledge that with a like however It's the interaction I'm after - I've asked a couple of times for DMU experts to assist with identifying the classes in photos, I know I could research and find out but then I'd have less time to scan, catalogue and post the photos so like signalling questions I was hoping that those in the know would assist.

I did wander away from the Wirral, there are North Wales photos soon, Reading, Doncaster, Dundee, March, Guide Bridge ( including 76s) all sorts of places will appear in time, I've currently posted around 167, I have catalogued 1600 and scanned 3000 with a further 1500 on the "to scan" list - and then I move to the next negative album, and there are several more to get through after that.

Please do keep posting, some of us though we don't have any interaction right now are watching with interest. We do appreciate the time you're spending to share these with us. Once you get round to Doncaster (or anywhere east coast) I'm sure I'll have questions and comments.

Ditto. Just found this thread and spent an enjoyable half hour going through and 'liking'. Can't add anything useful or informative at the moment, only to say that views of the internals of (mainly) long lost mechanical signalboxes are great and only usually the province of a privileged few so thanks for sharing.

hello

like, I suspect, many viewers of this thread I find it rather different from other threads

and offering many photos of infrastructure that could be very useful for modellers.

Again, like others, I don't keep clicking 'like' but that doesn't mean I don't think it is useful.

So please keep posting the photos - and text

Finally some shots of Edge Hill, this was the original panel which had been altered over the years as things contracted, it was replaced a couple of years after the photos.

I managed to give the Liverpool - Newcastle Express cats eyes, instead of a green while having a go on the panel, my mate (sadly passed on now) made me speak to the amused driver, and hold the button for 2 minutes to cancel the wrong route and reset - happy days.

Cracking photos Dave, many thanks for sharing. Particularly like DAS000203 at Norwich, with the semaphore signals and theatre type route indicator. Also DAS000216 at Bromborough, nice variation of the head code panel for the modellers.

Regards, Ian.

Got to say, love this photos of the old signals. Considering how fast they are dissapearing now, network rail having the funds that BR whished it did to replace them.

Those norwich photos, a duff, tractor, and peds everywhere.

Keep them coming. Even the power boxes are going now. These photos remind us of what the railway used to be like. I was going to say how quickly thing change, but then I realised these photos are from over 35 years ago, and started to feel old.

I used to like Flickr, but nowadays I find it has been so flooded with modern digital photos that searching for older images has become a nightmare; so please keep posting your photos here. They are so full of detail that few other photographers (me included) seemed to bother with while taking pictures of locomotives.

And as with other individuals' threads (such as Dave F's) I can just scroll slowly down the page and know more or less what I am going to get without having to switch albums/collections or whatever they are called these days.

Hi Dave,

I presume the rusty rails in the foreground are the result of the "mods" to the panel diagram. How long was it before the physical track was actually remodelled?

Regards, Ian.
