sb67
Finally got round to thinking about the buildings to hide the exit to the fiddle yard. I thought about using his Metcalfe kit I had with a few added bits with a walkway in the middle, I did this rough mock up but I'm not sure about having half a building at the front but cant think what else to do. I also thought about re covering the buildings in scalescenes brick paper. I wondered what people think? Steve.
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted May 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2019 Morning Steve. Looks good. I would have the 'bridge' as low as I could and consider having the half building a tad further forward if possible to hide the entry to the fiddle yard. If this is not possible, I would place a building, low relief or even just a wall at the back of the fiddle yard which would be visible when looking towards the entry exit slot. Could you inlay the first couple of inches of the fiddle yard track? I think it needs something to take the eye away from what is a large 'slot' into the fiddle yard.... RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted May 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2019 Hi Steve, some nice ideas going on and good to see it taking shape. Perhaps move the overbridge walkway to the middle position and have a loading unloading platform on the right hand building tapering from the front and broadening out as it vanishes into the fiddle yard. All the best Adrian.
sb67
Thanks guys, the walkway covers up a door in the Metcalfe building, I know what you mean about the slot leading to the fiddle yard. I'm thinking about having a go at scratchbuilding something similar so that I'm not tied to the shape of the Metcalfe kit. I think I'd like it to be in London yellow brick as well. I've a couple of photo's of buildings I like but I'm not sure how to transfer them to model form. Steve.
sb67
Made a start on the building using some scalescenes parts, I'm not sure about the colour though so I might try another type of building.
sb67
I really like the concrete warehouses/factories that you see, modelled so superbly on Canada Street so I thought I'd try building a smaller version for my layout to see how it fits, not sure if it will work but I'll carry on building it for a bit of practice. Not sur which one I prefer yet. Steve.

Steve Just come to this thread and like it. How about a row of stable type buildings along the end wall? Single story and enough projection to slightly mask the exit? There are some other useful prototypes along the quay as well. Martyn Martyn
sb67
Thanks Martyn, I used to visit Ipswich a few years ago and I'm familiar with that bit of the docks, there is plenty of inspirational buildings there, I'd love to have seen it in it's prime though. sb67
I've finally got round to finishing buildings for the fiddle yard end. Still got to add guttering and down pipes etc. Just got to cover the big ole' somehow, I'm still thinking of a walkway and maybe some pipework going across. I'm wondering though as it's spanning 3 tracks I'd need a support in the middle somehow? Steve. Edited June 13, 2019 by sb67 6 1

Will read through your thread to see how you’ve done it and copy if I may ?! By all means David, it's an idea I got from Gordon Gravetts layout Arun Quay. It can be found in Model Rail Journal No262. Any questions I'll try and help. Steve.
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted June 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 14, 2019 Hi Steve, looks really good, and with the addition of a centre support for the walkway be it a brick structure, or steel work would help to block the exit to the fiddle yard. All the best Adrian.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 14, 2019 (edited) What about a covered walkway between the buildings, with a corrugated tin roof? (D'oh, you said that...) You could also extend the facing wall of the far building under the bridge, into the fiddle yard. Edited June 14, 2019 by Stubby47

I didn't think of extending the wall into the fiddle yard, that's a good idea.
sb67
I've made a walkway to go over the tracks between the two buildings, I had a go at the hairspray technique to create some peeling faded paint but I'm not to sure about it, got to add washes and powder so hopefully I can make it look a bit better. Hi Steve, That looks great, I was thinking of doing something similar to link the mill buildings on my layout, and hide the back scene join a bit more. Like it. sb67
Thanks for the comments guys, I'm now looking at how to paint the roof to represent asbestos sheets? haven't got any ideas yet. Steve.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted June 30, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 30, 2019 I think I have read using talcum powder sprinkled onto wet paint to give it some texture is one possible answer? Cheers, Ade. 1 1
sb67
Thanks Ade, I will try that. I did that to represent the concrete on the layout, Just got to try and not put too much on. Steve.
sb67
Finished the walkaway, I used a small amount of talc to give the roof some texture. The wash I weathered it with has tried with a bit of a sheen, it was a Wider Black Smoke wash and no matter how much I mix it, it dries like this, so I might re do that and add some powders in places.
