RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted October 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2018 I came across a reference to the first GWR 'Auto trains'. Apparently there were two converted 0-6-0T (saddle tanks?) converted for a trial, in 1903/4 and ran on the Brentford branch. Apart from this extract, I've found little on them. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=Bol8AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT159&lpg=PT159&dq=gwr+1904+push+pull&source=bl&ots=WwpHAp0ooQ&sig=Uoyt3ADy06eQLEioDbOKvqVSvcY&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiCiPzEzufdAhWDdd4KHYFSB4wQ6AEwEnoECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=gwr%201904%20push%20pull&f=false I've also found a model based on one, in Railway Modeller 1959 March issue. According to the article, it was disguised to look like a piece of coaching stock. Any more info out there, I'm just curious.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted October 2, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2018 The loco that had a coach type body put on it was a 2021 class and worked in the Plymouth area for a while, shortly after it was converted, I don't have too hand which one. Devo63
2120 & 2140 (2021 class 0-6-0ST/PT) and 517 class 0-4-2T's 533 & 833 were fitted with the overall body cladding in about 1906. It tended to collect a fair amount of ash deposits which were hard to clean out so didn't last very long. Also the cabs were reported to get very hot and uncomfortable to work in and they were converted back from 1911 onwards. Dave R,

RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted October 3, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 3, 2018 Thanks for the feedback. All very interesting. By the sound of it, the footplate was not the place to be.
