A picture in the book 'The District Controller's View - The M&SWJR' shows the Southampton - Cheltenham train on the 4th of August 1956. The manor hauling it had failed at Ludgershall and had to replaced by the engine on the local goods train, which was a 2251 class engine. The train had been strengthened from 3 coaches to 8 coaches, and was over the limit for a 2251 class loco, however no other engine was available at Ludgershall or Swindon, so the 0-6-0 took the train all the way to Cheltenham. The book shows the train at Cirencester.
The identifiable coaches are of GWR design (Hawksworth,Collett,Collett).
