RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2018 Several reports have mentioned him doing Arctic convoys to Russia. I know he did trans-Atlantic convoys to Canada because he was on the same ship as my father. They got to know each other quite well as they were the same age and rank. RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2018 Several reports have mentioned him doing Arctic convoys to Russia. On a minesweeper, apparently, which must have been brutal.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2018 For the trans-Atlantic runs, they were on a corvette - probably not much better than the minesweeper.
RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2018 Slightly off topic, but I found this page giving details of the Arctic convoys. All the named RN minesweepers appear to be of the Halcyon class, which look very similar in size to a Flower class corvette. I'll leave it to the experts to judge which was the better sea boat. EddieB
Sad news, but I suppose not unexpected. He spent his final years at a retirement village near Wantage, where there was also a family friend of ours (who passed away a few weeks before). A common love of music often brought them together. Having grown up seeing him on TV, I never realised how small he was in real life.
Butler Henderson
Sad news - but obviously had a lengthy retirement, apparently it stopped reading the TV news in 1982 so 36 years post main job is a good innings,
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2018 RIP Richard Baker. Sad news. I grew up with him on the TV news and commentating on many big events. I particularly recall him on the BBC Proms and also the annual Remembrance Sunday ceremonies. Thank you Richard.
Southernman46
Flower class corvette. I'll leave it to the experts to judge which was the better sea boat. "Would roll on wet grass" ISTR was an oft quoted summary of their sea-going qualities A Fine Man - glad he was rewarded with a long life
