Danemouth
I would like to paint the edges of the Danemouth baseboard in the brown used by BR(W) as the backing colour for signs etc. either an emulsion or satin gloss. Obviously modelling paints are out of the question - how many tinlets would it take? :) Any suggestions for a suitable colour that I might find an a DIY shed please? Many thanks, Dave
Nearholmer
If you are lucky enough to have a genuine sign, take it to the DIY shop and they will scan it and mix paint to match. Ive done the same to match some coloured card with paint, and the outcome is exceedingly accurate. k

br2975
I was once advised to try Halfords Rover Russett Brown for GWR coaching stock brown, but I know of no comparable colour for BR (WR) brown. But I'll keep digging Dave.
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted January 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2019 I've heard some people swear by the Vallejo dark earth 71-042 but I don't know the RAL number of it that Dave would need to get a tin of it mixed in B&Q etc.

But I'll keep digging Dave. Definitely not, it’s a good match for wartime brown but far too red for GW brown (or the BR equivalent) For GWR brown I have found Vallejo German Cam Brown a good match, on their website there is a colour conversion chart that will give you the RAL/Pantone etc needed to mix it
K14
According to this site : https://www.stationcolours.com/gwr - it's BS381C 414 Golden Brown, however that looks way too light. I'd suggest BS381C 413 Nut Brown or 451 Chocolate: A decent trade paint supplier **ought** to be able to mix to BS381C. I wouldn't recommend giving them a Pantone reference as from my experience all you'll get is the nearest equivalent from the Dulux chart. Pete S. It must be a result of colour misregistration on the monitor, but I've never seen one of those charts that matches the actual colour. The real signs tended to fade from my recollection and the cream lettering made them look lighter anyway. Then add a layer of filthy crud on the top....

Many thanks, Dave Dave, I would collect a few colour swatch cards, take them home and see which looks right under your layout lighting. Alternatively, paint a piece of the same material as your baseboard edges with your preferred tinlet/jar then take it for scanning and matching as suggested by Nearholmer. Good luck! True enough, but the disparity between #414 and anything remotely like BR(W) brown is too great to explain that way in my opinion. I do wonder if someone has misread the chart & attributed #414 to #415. The Imperial Brown swatch looks closer to that on these examples: http://www.totemexperience.com/txp/index.html And these: http://www.totemexperience.com/txp/displays_swindon2005.htm Noticeable is that there are clearly differences in the shades, as also shown here: https://www.gwra.co.uk/auctions/totem-br-w-hf-stourbridge-junction-very-good-condi-2016jul-0178.html https://www.gwra.co.uk/auctions/totem-br-w-ff-yardley-wood-excellent-condition-one-2016jul-0208.html Pete S. timbowilts
According to this site : https://www.stationcolours.com/gwr - it's BS381C 414 Golden Brown.Gents, be careful here. That site is not discussing enamelled sign colours but actual building woodwork colours! My eyes tell me that imperial brown is the closest shade for a sign?
