PCM If you drill out the boiler exhaust ther was no mesh in there just the top of the boiler inerds.

Thanks Brian, I might have to see if I can find a few pics.

Cheers Peter.

Dia 720 actually. It's a shame they only do the TPO's with the large windows and not the more numerous smaller style. I have been getting hold of some other bits to finish it off, still need to order the transfers from Fox though.

Hello Brian all,

nice shot of the sorting van M80300 at Workington on one of the middle roads, the T.P.O. was normally stabled in one of the bays behind it. M80300 was a regular on the Whitehaven - Huddersfield, in the 80s. IIRC it was the sorting van on the last one haled by Black 5 5407. The normal formation was, loco, BG, POS, BG, BG. the last BG was shunted at Preston on to the up special TPO. and reattached from the night down, on the return. If the night down missed in the morning and you were on a town centre walk you knew you were in for a big second delivery.

The 31 is now in the paintshops, well I might get some primer on it when/if it stops raining!

In the mean time I will do a bit on the TPO. Below are some pictures of what came in the box plus a couple of extra bits I have got to hand.

First thing to change is the roof vents as the model has a single row but my picture shows 2 rows. Useing a Bachmann OO model for referance I have drilled holes for 2 rows.

On the underframe of these everything is doubled up. There are 4 battery boxes, 2 dynamos and 2 regulator boxes, shame the model has the standard underframe contents. But I have ordered the extra bits.

Hi Richard

If you look back through this thread you can see how the CPL Telltails look on these coaches.

The vac cylinder and dynomo are spares I had from Westdale projects.Don't know if you can get them from him seperatly though. I know you can get Easybuild ones ok. I don't know why JLTRT keep putting those riveted vac cylinders in their MkI's as they do the correct cylinder in the GUV I think. Laurie did say he will update the parts pdf sheet for the TPO's to include the extra underframe parts as it's not the standard MkI underframe.

I have made the truss rods and filled in the lights by the doors on the body as these went after the catching equipment was finished with in 1972.

A quick question for anyone, was the toilet window covered up on the plain side of these coaches? I have seen one picture that it is covered up on but were they all? I don't know why but everyone photo's the more interesting side!

They all should have been covered Brian. It was one of the High Security modifications made to the vehicles following the Great Train Robbery - so at a guess anything from say 65' onwards would have had the mod done - or at least be scheduled for it.

Nice work Brian,

I like CPL stuff, the late Carl Legg, was a genius, so glad that his wife et al. continues the business.

A bit annoying that the cyls are wrong on a premium kit such as that though, luckily, most comes out in the wash, when one can use spares box parts, mix, match and swap such about, yet it all adds to the cost....

Are those corridor connections your preferred option (the JLTRT versions look great, as spares, if a little on the pricey side when purchased in such a way) - how well do they buffer-up?- or will you use another type in the final edit?

Looking forward to seeing the build progress....an interesting prototype.

Hi chaps

The local bike shop will be doing the repairs for me as I just like riding them and in 38 years of bikes have never had any inclination to get down and dirty with them. I can't understand it really as I love pulling models to bits!

PCM If you drill out the boiler exhaust ther was no mesh in there just the top of the boiler inerds.

Recieved a JLTRT TPO this week, more on that later.

Probably the best way......sanity and time wise, I used to have to work on my own bikes, with the help of a couple of local specialists for certain tasks.....got me thinking that I have had my bike licence since 1983, wow I feel old....sadly dont have a bike these days, yet enjoy watching the TT etc. on TV...always hankered after a XT500 Yamaha, so as to do some green-laning, seems that they're now collectable and classed as a 'classic bike' these days!!!.... I still think of them as 'new.' and didnt realise that, that off 'roadtrip' was a pipe dream from 30 years or so ago.......road bikes were more my thing though.....how time flies!!

It is a shame that JLTRT do not put the right vac cylinders in the MkI's. If anyone is going to buy one perhaps ring Laurie and jog his memory to change them over before posting the kit off. I have been on to him to change the pdf that lists all the parts so the packer gets the right bits. The pdf list for the etched bogies do not show any coil springs so it was no surprise that there were none in the box. More expence from their profit posting these onto me!

The JLTRT coridoor connections are good but solid so do not give on curves.I have been useing the consertina card ones from Modellers Mecca for the innercoaches and just using the JLTRT one on the outer coaches.

My bike is a 1300cc Pan European that I use whatever the weather throughout the year, I would expect better from a tourer!

Replied to you once, then got kicked out, so here goes again!....

Yes the Modeller's Mecca connectors are simple yet effective....I am also going to try out the GJH ones too.

Shame that JLTRT havnt worked out the picking list as such would help, as you say, their coffers too..

That's a big ol bike.....I once fancied a CX500 for touring, yet my real wish list bike was a Yamaha RD250LC (or the weaker RD 350LC), yet a mate of mine wrote off a RD250LC, then a RG250 Gamma, then......about three bikes in all and such bikes earned a 'rep' with local families as 'widow makers' or words to that effect, the real fact of the matter was that the guy needed to learn to drive and get a car as he couldnt seem to stay on a bike!! Having said that I did once get hit by a car - who was on the wrong side of the road...

With Jap cast parts many are made abroad now (outsourced) and the Japanese have been stitched up on that front by other countries and cultures (a common mistake/misconception made those who outsource in assuming that all countries and cultures have the same values), their car industry is the same (within the past 5 years) with castings/casting production suffering the most, yet such shouldnt happen on a bike of that calbre, I hope that you get it sorted and the replacement part serves you well.

BTW - If you purchased the bike new and it's less than six years old, you could get it done for free under the sale of goods act et al...

Stay safe and good luck.

Hi,

My kit only had one bag of standard Mk1 underframe parts so a quick call to JLTRT should have resulted in the extra underframe parts arriving at home but will have to wait until Saturday evening to see what has arrived.

The instructions are not the easiest to follow if you dont have prior knowledge of what goes where. Your article will be very useful, as many phots as possible please especially the underframe.

If you can wait a bit TTG I will take some pictures but I am still waiting for the extra bits and am also painting the Heljan 31, and work! Although I do try to keep the latter to a minimum as it gets in the way of the former. I have got some paint to do my Bedford TK lorry so that joins the list "to do", Oh and the Clayton can be painted!

Thanks Brian,

I am awaiting the parts from JLTRT which have not arrived yet at home. Possible delay due to me needing a new roof as the bushes that take the retaining screws are damaged on mine and the screws & inserts supplied are the wrong ones. Should be 3,5mm not the 4mm ones supplied.

So things from my end are very much on hold.

Back to work for me Monday as well but hopefully evenings will be free to can do a bit.

Thanks again Brian for the help.

Looking forward to the painted Clayton Brian, with all you have going on at the moment I was beginning to think you'd forgotton it.

Best wishes,

Chris.

No not forgot it but I have asked Precision Labels to do the lettering on the cabside and he said he was a bit busy at the mo so can't do it yet so there's no rush to paint it if I don't have all the transfers to hand.

Transfers going on the 31243 though as I type this!

Well I'm blowed, after saying the Clayton is not getting painted yet as I don't have all the transfers I just found out that I haven't got any data panels and shed allocation stickers for the 31, doh :fool: So this is as far as it can get for the time being. I forgot to say that looking at pictures of 31243 I noticed it was fitted with tripcocks at some time so still had the cutout on the bufferbeam fairing, so out with the drill it was!

I have added all I can underneath the TPO until I get the other castings fromJLTRT. The next thing to do will be to glue the sides and ends to the chassis then fill the joint in the corners and at the same time add a bit more filler to the bits I filled on the side earlier. I still have the correct bogies to build so it's just resting on these Commonwealths temporaraly. One thing to note with these is that the V hanger is on the right of the cylinder like when fitted with B4/Commmonwealths so note the rod to the bogie comes from the top of the pivot rod rather than under it like most B1 bogies. Must admit I am not a fan of the truss rods having whitemetal cross supports, I prefere the all etched versions.

Brilliant photos, thanks Brian.

Got my new roof in the post today but no battery boxes or other extra fittings needed for the TPO. I expect I am on the same waiting list as you Brian.

I will look at my underframe when I get back to Bristol as I think mine is the etched version although the white metal parts are in the kit. It certainly was on my BG and makes up quite nicely.

Just noticed in the bottom photo, you have indents for two battery boxes on your floor, mine has only one indent per side if I remember rightly. Another one to look at Monday when I get back.

Thanks again Brian, nice job.
