At Gibbo’s request, here are the paint colours that I used for the “tankertainers”.

IMG_0250.jpg.1739539d233f2c35d06109dcc02ecf16.jpg

The green is Phoenix BR DMU green with some warning yellow cut in - airbrushed on.

The white tanker is Halfords white primer sprayed on from the can.

The yellow is the natural unpainted Hornby plastic with the walkways painted grey before giving the whole lot a spray of matt varnish.  I use Army Painter “anti-shine” spray varnish for this.

I drilled and opened out the moulded blank lightening holes in the container base prior to painting.

Cheers

Is this an accurate representation of a prototypical container?

Hi Mike,

I based it on the photo in post 8 of this thread on RMWeb.  It’s as “accurate” as I was prepared to make it according to this photo.

I couldn't find any photos of the containers on actual Freightliner flats on Google images.  Plenty of pictures of the Triang Hornby originals but the above link was the only photo of a real container that I could find.

It would be great if someone has more photos of these containers on the flat wagons and could post them here.

Cheers

Darius

Ironically the Bachmann models got me interested again, but there’s no way I’m paying their prices . I’ve been buying up occasional second hand Tri-ang Hornby ones . I know they are not as accurate as Bachmann but they’ll do , especially as you need multiples . Does anyone do containers for 60s/70s era ? I saw a great Manchester Liners containers on Hornsey Broadway last week . These weren’t the Triang versions .

Managed to score an S Kits conversion set off eBay, which removes a lot of the grunt work.

I've done eight with the S-kits detailing, and as mentioned a while back, I've started going back through them to replace all the underframe details. The first four units have now been done, making half the train:

Here's a closer shot of the train:

I've still to add the Railtec transfers but I think I'll try and do them in one hit when I've got all the wagons done (plus a ninth still be started). I only have room for a 5 + 4 rake. One benefit I've found with replacing the trussing is that I've been able to reduce the sag which was present in a number of my donor models, some of which were worse than others.

Another FGA completed.   I fitted a Train-Tech LED tail light using the adjacent container to house the battery unit.

All the best

With thanks to jessy1692 for the decal artwork I have completed some Manchester Liners and OCL 30’ containers.  I printed the container side decals on white decal sheet and trimmed them to fit the containers.

Now just need to complete the flats for them to sit upon - and build some 20’-ers.

Hi Darius,

These boxes are spreading faster than a certain disease, there is quite an outbreak on my bench also !

May i ask if the flat-sided containers (as depicted above) and the horizontally-ribbed ones lasted long enough in service to overlap with the vertically-ribbed type?

Hi Barry,

The first vertically ribbed boxes that I know of were the Ford 30' boxes that ran between Halewood and Genk via the port of Harwich. The majority of vertically ribbed boxes came into service in the late 1960's onward and so with the early boxes lasting into the early 1980's then that ought to give you an idea of how things were.

One thing to look out for is that originally boxes on the British railways were 8' high but later 8' 6" boxes were introduced to various routes, loading gauge permitting. Also a lot of the smooth sided boxes built around steel box frames as represented by the types above were insulated containers rather than just a 6mm or 8mm pressed steel plate for sidewalls.

Some great work on the BR Freightliner flats.

I do however have to ask, is there a Milwaukee Road layout lurking somewhere as well?

John.

Not as yet...

Not that I need them now, (as if I haven't got a big enough roundtuit pile already), but might these transfers be available to commoners at some point?

Mike.

Evening Mike, iv got the files backed up at work so ready to go whenever. I can send you it over if you like, just needs printing on some decal paper easily obtainable off Ebay and pretty cheap. Im currently out of paper but will no doubt get some more, you can get a lot onto a sheet of A4. Iv still mine to do but have a couple of sheets of spares that the printer smudged bits of them so could send some usable bits.

Drop us a DM if you like

Cheers
