Dibber wrote "without revealing any big news stories" - or wods to that effect. So...... does this mean that neither Hattons nor Olivia's Trains have revealed the Model Rail scoop? Wow, if this is so, it must be a really big story! Can't wait - where's the drool tank and froth catcher?

Mine arrived this morning, although I have been too busy to have a proper look at it yet.

The two big stories are the RAILS LMS pioneer diesels (10000 & 10001) and the Olivia's Trains Woodhead electrics and Blue Pullman.

There a threads for both of these running already.

Also MR have commisioned DRS 37409 and MK2a DRS escort coaches. Also commisioned are Regional Railway MK2a coaches (TSO x3 & BSK) and a 150/2 DMU in scotrail 'swoosh' livery.

Finally they are doing a Series1 LandRover in BR red/cream colours.

Just an observation really,

but has anyone else come close to losing everything from the thin plastic envelope due to the inclusion of the (very welcome!) Axminster tools catalogue?

The extra weight seems to have caused the plastic envelope to start disintegrating!?!

If consensus is yes, i volunteer to send an email to appropriate department, as the packaging is undouptably NOT an editorial matter!!

Cheers,

John E.

I wish there was a way to "opt out" of all the extra crud that gets inserted in magazines, the first thing I always do after I get any magazine (whether post or off the shelf) is to hold it at the spine and shake all the other stuff out, and bin it, as a matter of principle.

Given today's enviromental awareness, I do find it strange that so much unwanted advertising gets in and is just wastage to most people - ditto the piles of election leaflets we've had over the last few weeks, and the myriad of takeaway leaflets and who knows what else I come home to every day.

Cromptonnut, just noticed that 33 minutes (co-incidence!) after your post #10 in this thread, the news started to break!

Just wish I hadn't seen Taz's posting - I was hoping to wait until I can buy a copy on publication day! Impatience is not a virtue.

Hope I can still find some surprises when I do get it in my hands.

The only thing of particular interest to me so far is the Regional Railways Mk 2's - but I'm glad such a wide variety of new, albeit rather specialised, models seem to be coming out.

I guess it shows there is still a lot of trade confidence in the hobby, which has to be a good thing, regardless of whether any of the offerings are on your 'wish list'.

Will the Regional Railways Mk2 coaches be available separately or do you have to buy all four together please? I only want one to go with my RR Mark 1s.

Two twin packs. One with 2xTSO and one with 1x TSO and 1xBSK.

I do find it strange that so much unwanted advertising gets in (quote)

Because advertisers PAY for it, that's why! Advertising helps pay for editorial content. And as far as we're concerned leaflets and supplements are great because its advertising which doesn't take up actual magazine pages. Given the choice between selling a page in the magazine or a one-sheet insert - the first may well mean a page less of editorial, the second can mean a page MORE editorial. Now, which would you rather have?

Less useless advertising overall, particularly annoying inserts that just fall out as soon as I open the magazine. Sorry. I tend to find over 90% of all advertising amongst any modelling magazines I buy to be of little to no interest to me, and I would rather , if I can, support my local model shop for major purchases than get it for a couple of quid less from a big box-shifter somewhere at the other end of the country who then charges me £4 to post it.

You will, however, note that I did mention that all magazines (and not just modelling ones) suffer from the same problem, and I did not single ModelRail out as being particularly guilty of it - this just happens to be in the ModelRail forum.

My June ModelRail was sat on the doormat waiting for me when I got home this evening, so once I've shaken out the detrius, I will sit down and read it whilst dinner cooks.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to bring up a basic costing principle here to help you understand why there's advertising in mags.

Sales of magazine + Advertising Sales (+ sales of commissioned models) - Paper/print costs - Distribution Costs - Staff costs - Contributor costs (- cost of commissioned models) - everything else you can think of = Profit to make publisher think it's worthwhile producing next month's edition.

Take the advertising sales out of that and the cost of your magazine without advertising would probably double; sales then halve and the publisher makes nothing and Chris has to toddle down the Job Centre.

How the hell would anyone know the advertising is useless to you and useful to me?

Maybe, being commercially minded, I'm too judgmental of such ill thought through statements but I think it's worth pointing out so that no-one makes the same comments again.

Two points on this:

1. I am sure Chris would gladly swap less advertising for more editorial but are you all prepared to pay the cost premium to enable this?

2. All that advertising is a sign of a healthy marketplace - if MR can sell all the space each month and keep magazine prices down then that indicates there are a lot of companies wishing to do business in the modelling arena. I personally find reading the non box shifter adverts in Railway Modeller interesting it shows the depth of modelling support available to us.

I'm fully aware of the "basic costing principle" but that doesn't mean I am not allowed to find advertising irrelevant or annoying.

Not being - or having any need to be - party to ModelRail's accounts, I don't know what sort of profit is made, or of the costs involved. However, I repeat that my view does not change either.

However, one thing we probably will agree on is that this particular discussion probably belongs somewhere else than this thread.
