JAMIE'S RANDOM UK RAILWAY PICTURES

You did really well with those night-time shots. It's a shame about the colour cast on the 'inside' pics but that's just down to the artificial lighting, which could be a real b*gger to filter.

Dave Green who I was with was advising me.  I didn't have a very good tripod but was very pleased with the way they came out. Considering tbat they are over 40 years old they seem to have stood up well.  I fou d anotber in tbe store room yesterday and scanned that. A ckass 40 on the Long Drag. It'll be added on to the end of these.  After that you'll have to wait till I get back to the UK, and get some time to get trackside.  Meanwhile I've still some way to go with my American Pictures plus other European ones and a few from Australia and Pacific Islands.

Hallo Jamie  from a cold and dark Aylesbury   they are great photos like the motive power the Deltic brings back happy memories watching them hammering up and down the ecml.

Yes the Deltics were my favourite. I used to watch them on the viaductline coming out of Leeds. They didn't start the 2nd engine till they got off the 10mph curves to avoid wheeslip.

Good evening from a cool and now dark Charente.   We are still at York in 1978. First of all a 40 on what looks like a parcels working.

Could be the "Redbanks" working. We used to stay late at the station as this working often provided a "rare" loco.

I wondered if it was one if the three Redbanks. They used to come through Morley between 1am an 2am. I can't remember what time we stopped to.  The Redbanks would have been heading north at that time of night as 3 separate trains.  I guess it probably was one of them.

Good evening from a rather wet and cool Charente.  First off from 1978 this scene at Paddington with a D400 as I knew them and an HST.

1558950321_Slides1978-4012.jpg.192084ece7e00d28c0ad7007917491ca.jpg

And then from the shed floor another one from 1971 as a northbound class 40 plods north with what I sort of remember was a Long Meg empties.  Taken just south of Langcliffe

And unfortunately that's it for the moment unless another box of slides surfaces.  Also when I ever get chance to get to the UK again I'll hopefully be out and about.   I have a granddaughter to introduce to the noble art of train watching.

Jamie

Note.   After the great outage of 2022 I've reloaded all my UK photos posted after 1/6/21 I've also added a copy of the last slide above in it;s proper place in the chronology.

Oh yes, the Newspaper return empties to Manchester Red Bank carriage sidings when the national dailies were also printed in Manchester. Wasn't the train of empties from Leeds renowned for loading to 20 or more NPCSS on occasion hauled by a single Class 40?

It always surprised me how many more loaded newspaper trains there were leaving Manchester Victoria than return empties to Red Bank. The logistics of marshalling the stock and diagramming locos must have been very complex.

It worked quite well I think.  IIRC 3 loaded trains over the hill each night one of which went to Heaton.  I think that thevother two ended up at Heaton and the same 21 vans were just put back together. Double headed in steam days , for the return journey.  The loco diagrams must have been ibteresting with two unbalanced worki gs each night.

For the North-East, there'd be one via Durham, to Newcastle, thence Heaton; a second via Sunderland, and possibly a third to Teesside. These would probably return to Red Bank as a single train

They did come back as a single train. When I used to see the loaded ones I was having a cuppa with the signalman at Morley about 01.30.  They were often Peak hauled.

Was Morley part of the 'Crossword Circuit'? A former colleague had been a signaller at Manchester Victoria, and said the signallers en-route would agree a choice of crossword. When the final 'box in the circuit had received its copy from the 'papers, then the clock would be started. I never found out what the prize might be....

I never saw any evidence of that.

Good afternoon.  Some more pictures to share still in 1996 on my cab ride. First off a shot looking back from the cab at the loading bunkers.

23483344_Slides1996-A023.jpg.0887a5e6095e0f3e51ffe136534e8ee4.jpg

And as we left there was another train coming in to fill up.

After we climbed off above the depot this shot suggested itself.

I tried to get an arty night shot during a night shift.  This was the best I could do.

Hi David

I'm glad that you found the picture. Unfortunately  I've got no idea what happened to the shunter and it's now over 20 years since I worked in that area.  I'm even in a different  country now.  The only thing that I can think of is to contact the Industrial Railway Society.  Obviously the National Power operation was closed down after the EWS takeover and I've no idea what the site is being used for now.  I wish you luck with the search.  If you would like a higher res copy of the photo, drop me a PM with your email address.

Good evening from a wet and windy West Yorkshire.  I got out this morning and actually msnsged to see a train.  I went to Church Fenton to look at electrification progress  those photos are on the Trsns Pennine electrification  thread.  However  I did see 195 118 working through. Here it is coming into Church Fenton from the north.

Then it set off very slowly towards Leeds.

5mph I believe or something like that leaving Church Fenton until out of the platform loop.

I'm not sure I had been aware of a driver sitting so centrally before. Excellent idea, of course, giving max visibility. BR's first attempt at this, with 321 more than 30 years ago, was doomed to fail, because the 321s were expected to work DOO, and the driver needed to lean out of the cab window to ensure all was well before setting off. Shore mirrors and VDUs were equally not well-placed for the driving seat, which while not central, was well away from the window. DOO never did get implemented out of Euston.

ISTR that there was a lot of trouble with the HST where the prototype  train got blacked by ASLEF because it had a central drivi g position.

Good morning.  I managedvhalf an hour onnLeeds ststipn yeste4day morning in between other duties.  It really is a great place to see plenty of trains.  I went to the west end of platform 6 and the first thi g I noticed was the new junctions put in over Christmas.

P2221760.JPG.336b1ffecdd5d4aafacdd6a039881380.JPG

At one point a freight crossed over from the Skipton direction heading down the Midland. The 66 can be seen in the distance.

Another thing I noticed was a 170 in full Northern livery. 170 473.
