Well the U2 or as Phil calls them "U Boats" is now finished. I will trundle it around my part completed layout for a while before sending it to Phil. It pushes (As requested, no coupling on the tender) Hornby coaches easily so I suspect Phil's target of ten coaches will be attainable. The gearing is though low so it is not in any sense a speed merchant

.

Engine and tender are very mucky as requested.

Alongside my "U" class on 70D, Alf seems to have dropped his shoval....Perhaps he was distracted by 31806 since it's pony wheel is off the track...

Thank you so much. Do pop a piece of wire across the Tender Buffers so you can stick something behind it R.

hang on to it for whatever time. I'm not in need just yet matey.

Looks damn beasty to me; show it off to anyone that needs a fright. Stealth Engine, runs silent run deep etc. so no wonder 31806's Bogie Wheels fell off and that geezer dropped his Shovel!

All the best,

Philth.

Whilst I wait for a bit more inspiration on layout matters I am catching up with a few outstanding matters re the loco fleet. 30398 is a largely scratch built S11 Drummond 6ft 4-4-0. It was attached to a very heavy white metal 8 wheeled Drummond tender. 30398 also had the original, and taller, lipped chimney. It only has a small open framed motor and it struggled to pull tender and 3 coaches. Given that I prefer the look of the shorter Urie style chimney I decided to convert the engine to 30397 which had the shorter chimney and a 6 wheeled tender. 30397 and 98 were both Basingstoke engines so in keeping with my desire to build examples of all engine types allocated to 70D in BR days 30397 would be fine.

So I purchsed a PDK Drummond 6 wheeled tender kit and it is almost complete. This is much lighter then the original tender so should help to old thing to wheez along a bit better. Pictures when complete. I am now held up by one tender wheelset - 3'11" which is currently not available. So what to do?

H15 30335 was one of my early builds around 2018. 335 was a Drummond "special" (Class E14) and was no more successful than all his other 4-6-0's so only one was built. In 1914 it was re-built by Urie on the lines of his H15 4-6-0 but retaining the original Drummond boiler which necessitated a longer wheelbase to accomodate the long firebox.

30335 was built using a modified PDK kit which caters for both wheelbase versions of the H15.

IMG_8568.JPG.a04841f6d63351cffc256d96bd86c10f.JPG

The tendr fitted to 30335 was unique being originally fitted to one of Drummonds Double Singles. It was scratch built.

IMG_8562.JPG.f6b9953d489039c14b28bea9475ac1f2.JPG

30335 runs very well but not when coupled to its tender. The tender wheels short on the brass square section that forms the tender chassis. I have tried many ways to overcome this shortcoming but without succes. Whilst it is a fair model I am going to have to do something about this. It was also built without tender pick-ups. I have therefore purchased a Hornby 8 wheeled Drummond tender chassis and I shall either build a new body or dismantle the exisiting body and fit to the Hornby chassis. Drastic I know but It is a good model of the prototype and deserves to be fixed....

So a few pictures of the nearly finished Drummond 6 wheeled tender for 30398 soon to become 30397.

Sorry about the pantograph connecting cables...

Alongside the similar tender for my D15, which is also a PDK kit build. When I built the D15 I was not aware of the real benefits a tender collector...

Apart from painting, trimming some handrail wire and fitting the buffer heads, the tender for 30397 is finished.

One last picture of the model as 30398 shackled to a large lump of white metal. (Suitable for an S15 or N15??)

The wheels have arrived for the ex GCR, LNER class B7 4-6-0. It is now complete and only needs assembly, perhaps just one more loco before layout work.....

The Drummond 6 wheeler tender just needs lining etc to finish so I have some time to see if I can fit a new tender tank to a Hornby T9 8 wheeled watercart tender. I am doing this to provide pickups in the tender and avoid the short circuits of the original tender.

The Hornby tender chassis has been assembled and the brass tank base made from brass.

IMG_8582.JPG.f86fc3e8dd3ef23583662639acaf534c.JPG

This Drummond tender side was double sheeted to accomodate feed water heating which was removed in 1912. The double sheeting was retained, it was made up of sections bolted to the inner sheeting which was quite a feature of this tender. Because I wanted to reproduce this feature I made the tender tank from 20 thou brass sheet. As you would imagine, it is very "wobbly". Rather like me sometimes... So I am using brass square section soldered to the tank to locate and support a thicker brass plate to brace the tank.

IMG_8583.JPG.5787f9086babbdbaadd974facce5669b.JPG

Brass square section in place.

IMG_8584.JPG.f1c525389926b4e133c3f28bf81e5055.JPG

Tank sheeting soldered to the brass plate and mounted on the chassis.

IMG_8585.JPG.11a74da1d135c985044f98f530ab8365.JPG

I will correct the wave when the coal plate/tank top is fitted.

Completed a bit more of the second tender for 30335. Pick-ups and connecting wires complete as is most of the body. THe Tank sides still look rather wavy but that will be cured when it is all soldered together.

I have fitted on of Markits opening tender tank fillers which will should be useful when 30335 stops for refreshments....

A few snaps showing 30335 with its new tender - which only requires lamp brackets and handrails and will then be ready for painting and lining.

Opening water filler shows up well. I have always thought that my 30335 was a washer thickness too low at the cab end(?)

When I was building 30335 back in 2018 I had just finished painting and lining it when I managed to drop it on the floor of my then workshop. It landed on the edge of the smokebox and needed a smokebox repair so back in the works before it had turned a wheel!

Kind regards,

Richard B

Er, it may be an optical illusion, but rather than than the rear of the loco being too low, the front of the tender looks too high, and appears to slope?

I've not come accross this feedwater heater in the tender before, I presume it was another of Drummond's rather whacky ideas for his 4.6.0.s?

Hi DLT,

Never trust one of my snapshots! The tender is level and having re-checked the loco, it is level and the cab roof hight is accurate to JH Russell's drawing of the beast on page 241 of Southern Locomotives..

Yes you are right 335 as originally built was one of his 4 cylinder 4-6-0 locomotives that almost ruined his reputation. The tender fitted to 30335 was his prototype 8 wheeler originally fitted to one of his "Double Singles" - yet another Drummond masterpiece. Fortunately he also was able to design some masterful 4-4-0's (T9, D15 etc..) but to be fair to him many early 20th Century locomotive engineers found it really difficult to make the step from 4-4-0 to 4-6-0. For example, John Robinson on the Great Central found it hard to better his "Directors" with a wide range of 4-6-0 types none of which were really successful.

The plus side of all this was that we modeller's have a wide range of prototype 4-6-0s to inspire us. I have built a B9 4-6-0 and my next job will probably be a B7 4 cylinder M/T design.

Kind regards,

Sssssh! Keep this a secret to only us reading this. I know that the GWR were the most magnificent at moving on from the 4.4.0 to the 4.6.0. I know this because, again as stated elsewhere, I was there. I am, you see, a Buddhist and have been reincarnated loads of times.

I thank you,

P

Don't worry about the Beast but I might just make the York show and see if Steve is going too.

Thanks R.

I have now finished the two tenders (apart from weathering and coal) and re-numbered the S11 4-4-0. So a few final snapshots of the completed work.

I think the S11 looks quite good, battered a bit but unbowed.

Richard. Doubt I'll be at York for usual crock reasons. Apologies.

Could you possibly pass on the Beast to Steve operating on Grantham the Streamliner Years or Clive on something somewhere (could be DEMU?) If not this is no problem of course.

Turns out I can't make it, off the Ribble Steam Railway with grandchildren.

Hope you improve soon Phil.
