On Cats

I once lived in a HMO with an attic flat with a fully enclosed stairwell; the light was controlled by a timed switch with a very short delay, so you had to rush to make it up or down before it went dark.  The lady occupant had a grey persian cat that liked to sleep on the stairs.  The inevitable accident resulted in her breaking her collarbone.  The cat was fine.

While a phone is nice and convenient for photo taking, I still prefer to haul the DSLR out and click away. Yesterday was a pleasant afternoon and I spent a few minutes taking photos of two of my cats. This is Gino who was once a stray kitten at my work. He has grown into an absolutely stunning boy and his look are matched by his personality. He is loving and affectionate and just loves to be with us. What more could you want?

Why Nomi, I hear you ask? Well, if you’ve got a couple of mins I’ll tell you.

 

It comes from ‘NOt Moving In’, which is what I told her when she first made an appearance.
 

I lived the single life in Doha, Qatar for a little less than ten years and soon after arriving I was outside putting some trash in the bin and there was a cats tail sticking out of the lid, and there she was, inside foraging for food (there’s lots of abandoned cats and dogs in the M.E.). I went back inside, opened a tin of tuna and fed her. The following night exactly the same happened. On the third night she was sat at the front door waiting for me when I pointed at her and said “ur not moving in”. But of course she did, I didn’t have a choice, I’d been well and truly adopted!

 

After a quick (but expensive) visit to the vet it was clear that she’d had a tough life even though she was only about one year old. However, with lots of care and attention she recovered well but remained frightened of any strangers, to the extent that if visitors came, Nomi would go outside and not reappear until they’d gone. The only lasting damage to her health was that all her teeth fell out at about age four but she’s adapted very well.
 

As a side story, in Qatar many kittens are bought for children but as soon as the pets become adults they get dumped. Also many expats leave pets on the street when they eventually return home. Dreadful treatment but it explains why there are so very many abandoned pets.

 

Anyroad, back to Nomi. When it came time for me to leave the M.E. it was unthinkable that I’d leave her behind so we had all the required inoculations (inc anti rabies) done and she was air-freighted back to Manchester. The flight cost $2000 US, about the same as a business class ticket, talk about travelling well!
 

We’ve both been back in UK for just short of three years and despite any misgivings I had about the change in climate compared to living in the ‘sand pit’ she’s done extraordinarily well, although she’s still not entirely comfortable walking across grass.......and she still hides when anyone visits the house.

 

PS. I wanted to call her Taliban but the missus was having non of it.

Here's George!

He is much bigger now than when we got him earlier this year as a six week old kitten.

 

He takes his fun seriously does George.

Here he is "enjoying" all the crinkly wrapping paper but don't be fooled, his claws are NOT set to stun! They are definitely set in kill mode as you can't be too careful with wrapping paper!

 

 

 

What did George get for Christmas?

Between Christmas and the New Year we try to complete a jug saw puzzle.

Fudge and Lego decided to join in but Lego soon got bored but found the board a comfy place for a nap.

This is Widget our first cat, who joined us from Battersea aged 10. If I went into my railway room without him he would miaow and scratch the door until I let him in. His best quality was that if he met someone who was indifferent or not enamoured by cats (like me) he would sit on your lap, spoon you in bed, and be all-round very dog like; if you were a cat lover he would go out of his way to be an utter b@stard with surprise biting mid stroke. He joined me for most of the wiring of my layout though I had to put down my soldering iron whenever he was exploring near me. He got cancer all over his body so we had him put down in August 2019 before burying him in our garden.

We have 2 rescues with us at the moment, one quite tragic, the owner has developed an incurable issue and can’t look after her, she’s very vocal and the first few times she yowled we thought one of the other cats had attacked her until we both saw she yowls then lies on the floor I front of the other cat to make it look like she’d been attacked for sympathy off us, as she complains so much for no reason, we have nicknamed her ‘Karen’ but she’s really loving and affectionate and her real name is peach!

 

The other one is a sad story too but more for the cat, basically 3 days before Christmas the owner called and said she didn’t want her cat any more, she was having a baby and just wanted to keep her 2 dogs, we tried to talk her out of it but she was having none of it so we went and collected him

 

he was obviously very stressed when we picked him up and was lashing out at anyone who went near him, he’s a big cat so when he took a swipe he really had power behind it, to handle him you had to use Kevlar lined gloves, it took a day or so at our house in a room with ‘cat calm’ plug in diffusers and soothing music to get him to calm down, that and Hank going in there and making friends with him, he’s now settled down and is such a placid cat, another thing that has soothed him is Lola, we think he’s in love with her, she won’t have anything to do with him and if he goes too near he gets a slap off her but I think he actually enjoys it on the quiet!

 

Whenever Lola is about he just sits and stares at her from afar, he’s a heavy breather too so you can hear him behind the curtains or in the cupboard like a stalker watching her!

 

it turns out that he is a previous rescue and was from another charity 4 years ago, so he’s been very lived and well cared for for 4 years then just dumped again

 

rhe previous owner says he is a part rag doll however my wife recons he may have some Mainecoon in him as he has an extra furry belly and whisps on his ears but he doesn’t Miow and chirp 

 

we call this huge fella ‘Big John’ an absolute stunner! 

 

 

as I say, both looking for a home early this year
