Any particular reason for grassing before ballasting? I do it the other way round. Pros and cons?

I don't know really other than thats what I had planned.  Both are messy and disruptive.  A little is to do with courage I think.  I haven't used N for a long time so any tips on getting the look right greatly appreciated.

My plan is this..

Paint the rails

Mask rails and paint the rest in track colour.

Ballast using fine buff (not sure how yet)

Weather with a light roof dirt spray.

Any thoughts.

I’ve done it both ways. With a grass mat I found that the ballast could help to disguise the edges but when using static grass I found it better to ballast first.

Just had a pleasant lunch hour in the sun by the lineside fotting and watching.  An actual hour in realtime:blink: waiting for trains to come!!

At 1215 having got away from its Gleneagles stop, Kingfisher deputising for a failed class 40 gets into its stride at Peterhead Farm with the 0930 St Mungo including fish traffic.

At 1230 having made my way into the field a Dundee A2 drifts past whilst slowing for its Gleneagles stop with the 1115 Glasgow-Dundee service.

At 1251 seen climbing through the cutting from 3 arch bridge 70021 Morning Star lifts the 1220 Perth-London Euston away from its Gleneagles stop.

Shortly after, and hot on the heels of the Brit once it cleared Blackford is a St Rollox allocated Black Five breasting the summit at MP135 with 1200 Dundee-Glasgow train.

A lovely hour if i do say so myself.

  • Clagmeister changed the title to Blackford to Gleneagles

I nipped back for the trio of Southbound workings at around 1800.

First up was a Brit working the 1415 Manchester and Birmingham 'fish'

Then shortly after by Merlin on the West Coast Postal.

Before the light faded completely a V2 worked the Glasgow portion off the Postal past a mere 10 mins behind the Flying A4

Hi Mike,

A man of your means ought to have a Pentax S1 fitted with a Takumar lens.

Just one from this morning.  St Rollox allocated 60027 'Merlin' leads the 0715 Glasgow-Dundee train north.  Often, when both St Rollox A4s or the A3s were available they would drop onto the early Dundee service.  I won't be around but I assume 60031 Golden Plover will be on the DN Grampian.

Currently ballasting.  I despise it more than dropping the real thing at 2am in some good awful possession in the middle of nowhere.  Is there anyone who likes this bit?

I actually find it very therapeutic!  Pushing little stones with a brush into place at my own speed and pace, good CD in on the background, not having to think too much, getting it looking how I want and then satisfaction at the end of it!  Maybe I am just odd!!!

Your doing well though, its looking good so far.

Interesting thoughts on it.  I tried it, frustrating rather than therapeutic for me.

Well I suppose we all get different enjoyments out of the hobby!!

There are lots of colour pictures of this location in the Verden Andersen and Keith Pirt books all of which I am sure you have seen. It seems to have been a favourite location with both of them.

I do remember a book somewhere with 4 pictures of just this location , one for each season. i will dig it out later!

You must be pleased to be underway after waiting for the shed to complete.

Cheers

David

You wouldn't happen to know the titles of the books with their Gleneagles pictures in would you?

Thanks

Scottish Steam - W J Verden Anderson - Ian Allan

Are the ones I refer to.  Outstanding images with very informative captions.

You'll also want to pick up Memories of Steam from Glasgow to Aberdeen - Michael S Welch, if you haven't already, The Last Years of Scottish Steam In Colour - David Dunn - BLP and First Generation Scotish Diesels In Colour - David Dunn - BLP.

Finally, Diesel Days Scotland - Brian Dickson - Ian Allan, might be useful.

Best

Hi Mike,

You have to engage yourself in a state of Mythical Time for that sort of work, that way you will not experience what you do not wish to experience or perhaps change the experience to one that is more suited to ones outlook. Expectation will only compound you poor state of mind should you find yourself not enjoying your life as it appears your conscious self at such a juncture.

But you already knew that.

Looking forward to weathering the ballast down in a day or two.

I have used a different colour for the lineside grass, it should look when fenced off i hope.

Britannia works the 0440 Carlisle-Perth vans

Avery nice layout which captures the area  like the grass and your rolling stock very enjoyable to follow ,now you have to get a Clan to finnish the atmosphere.

I'd love some 12A allocated Clans, but how?

Hi Mike,

  1. Buy a Britannia.
  2. Cut the boiler off.
  3. Make a new Clan sized boiler.
  4. Test fit new boiler on chassis.
  5. Reduce high spots of Britannia chassis if required.
  6. Once new boiler is fitted secure in place.
  7. Paint and renumber suitably.
