Clarky1000
Can anyone tell me what the "(S.M)" lettering on the end of a Standard BR Carflat - below the 90 MPH lettering - means? Thanks Graeme
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 22, 2021 (edited) Sorry....No and I’ve got about 25 Carflats. Never noticed the marking until you pointed it out. This is the marking on the end drop panel. Edited February 22, 2021 by acg5324
mark54
As it is under the 90MPH lettering, I could guess it stands for Special Maintenance.
Mark Saunders
Not seen any photos or models but it could be steam manifold if there is a through steam pipe?

I think your right. Quote Not seen any photos or models but it could be steam manifold if there is a through steam pipe? Not sure if they kept the steam pipes, only ever seen the Carflats marshalled at the rear of a Motorail train. Looks like from the picture just the brake pipe. RMweb Premium Steven B Posted February 23, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 23, 2021 Special maintenance make sense. I don't remember ever seeing any Carflat pictures showing them fitted with either steam heating pipes or wiring for ETH. Steven B.

Special Maintainance is correct, same markings were seen on some oil box fitted BGs on East Coast diagrams in the 70s.
