richard i
I hope it comes soon for you. If it is any glimmer of hope, I have been modeling with one eye for many a year. In fact I can’t remember having both to work with. It does make depth perception more difficult but a couple of extra angles helps get pieces to sit in the correct place. richard 2

Popular Post Jol Wilkinson
I am slowly getting underway again, although the permanent damage to the sight in my right eye is a drawback. The second batch of ply arrived in early January and I have now altogether built nine of the twelve baseboards to complement the two from the London Road exhibition display layout. I've just started the last two to complete the oval but the final one for the engine shed are will be put on the back burner for now. The whole lot is independent of the building (i.e. not screwed or bolted to the walls) and can be readily broken down should the need ever arise. Making the boards is quite slow as they are fairly complex shapes rather than rectangles and the last ones (which includes the lifting section by the door) need to be made to fit the gap accurately, so that'll take a few more days (Oh for instant wood glue!). A delivery of trackwork items has arrived from the S4Society Stores (very rapid turnaround and robustly packaged), so next I will need some adhesive for the foam underlay and to borrow the Vee and Switch filing jigs from my local S4 Area Group of wot I am a member. I considered buying these ready made but at about £35 per point (and there are about 14 in the storage sidings alone), decided I will make my own again. 13

Hibelroad
Yes it is good to hear that you are modelling again despite these setbacks. Hopefully the problem has been stabilised now so that you can forge ahead with your project. Regarding instant wood glue there is something called mitre glue which is a bottle of superglue and an activator spray. The superglue goes on one face and the other face is sprayed with activator, then they bond in 10 seconds as they are held together. This stuff is available from the likes of Screwfix and only costs a fiver or so. It may not be suitable for all joints but could be used in conjunction with wood glue to hold the joint while the wood glue sets and allow early handling. 1 1
D-A-T
A question? Is the layout going to be a permanent home fixture or might we have the pleasure of seeing it at an exhibition in the (medium) future?

I retired from exhibiting London Road and won't be taking it up again. The original terminus section of the layout has been bought back by John Redrup and is currently in storage. The "Extension" that I added (to create a through station and which is how it appeared for several years) forms the centre of the new oval layout. So no exhibitions for this version but I will be happy to welcome visitors when there is something more complete to show.

RMweb Premium Chas Levin Posted February 9, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 9, 2022 Hello Jol, happy to see you back modelling, hope it all goes smoothly and that you're enjoying it. I too hope the sight problem has stabilised; also, I understand that where a medical issue has affected a sense such as sight or hearing, the brain gradually learns to compensate, to work around the change, so that it becomes less problematic after a time: I hope that happens to you too . 1 1
Jol Wilkinson
Hello Chas, the consultant was hopeful that my brain would be able to compensate for some of the problem, but it isn't cooperating fully. At my age that isn't surprising. I am alright at building the baseboards (brain fade mistakes excluded) so the full test will be when I get down to the trackwork and, importantly, building some more stock, etc. Jol 1
RMweb Premium Chas Levin Posted February 12, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2022 I'm sorry Jol; age-related bodily unco-operativeness is intensely frustrating! I suspect I may have a few years on you (at 55) but I already find similar poor behaviour where previously things would be right as rain very quickly. Keep the faith! The important thing is that you continue enjoying whatever you do 1
Popular Post Jol Wilkinson
Some months since I posted on here but there has a bit of progress through the summer months. The baseboards are completed, bar the one for the steam shed (LNWR parlance for a loco shed), which will sit behind the running lines baseboard beyond London Road bridge (at the far end in this photo). The lines in the forefront on the left are the running lines, whilst those on the right are the end of the two terminus roads (the point for the end of the crossover nearest the camera is out of the picture. The platforms will extend towards the camera. The trailing point on the left-hand running line will lead into a small goods area, much like the one on the original layout. The two baseboards with the station buildings, etc. are those I built when I converted the original London Road into a through station. THe terminus version of the layout is now back with John Redrup of LRM. On the opposite side of the room are the storage sidings. The plain trackwork is C&L flexi-track but this has turned ouut to be slighly undergauge when laid so I will possibly build the plain running lines with timber sleepers and Exactoscale chairs although I have some Exactoscale gauge widen moulded sleeper bases to try. Unfortunately, these have thick sleepers so I'll have to see how to them join up the other track with thin sleepers All that has left me with about 12 lengths of C&L P4 flexitrack. Any offers? I have found the track building quite easy despite my eyesight problem. The points in the storage sidings are purely functional and "half timbered" to save time and sleeper strips despite my eyesight problem. That's mainly due to the fact it is all jig based (I have amassed quite a selection over the years). It is also very satisfying. Over the last few weeks, I have taken a brake from the layout and been trying my hand at building a loco kit. Both layouts will still be called London Road - there are several others out there but not LNWR - but only the original will be exhibited again, if John can find tine. He is normally busy with LRM - the recent closure of his main etch supplier PEC, causing issues at present. Jol
Popular Post Jol Wilkinson
Sometimes taking a new photo of a part of the layout and comparing with the last similar one on here makes me wonder how much progress I have actually made. Work has continued on the new station throat as shown. The goods area to the left now has the points installed (two are off camera to the left, while the nearer running line continue from bottom left for another two metres, the other reaching the end of this baseboard. No more points are needed here, but there will be another two or three at the other end of the station in the steam shed (LNWR parlance for loco shed) at the far end of the station. Work is a bit slow as I am hand building the running lines to LNWR track panel dimensions. I had planned to use flexi track as in the storage sidings but they turned out to be slightly under gauge and I did not want to risk it on the curved tracks, even those are minimum 60" radius. Once the goods sidings are finished, then I can remove this baseboard to wire it up and fit the point motors. Hello Chas, they are both LNWR 50! cove roof non corridor carriages from the LRM range. The nearer is a D326 Brake Third, the other a D102 All First, IIRC. Etched brass with extruded aluminium roofs, they were the first out of the stiock box to be used for "test vehicles" on the new trackwork. The unpainted brass horsebox on the right is a PC LNWR kit, one of two I bought partially built. One has been soldered, the other assembles (by the look of things) with superglue! I've just been given a group of five Modelu figures, painted by my friend Dave Carr. Dave's background has been in wargaming and his painted figures are even more impressive than Cat's work.
