Purpose of pipe on A2 locomotive

It runs from the driving cab to the smokebox and is part of the controls of the loco, thus if on the left, the loco is driven from the left.

I think it's called the ejector pipe.

To be strictly accurate it is both to exhaust the steam, but more importantly creates a lower vacuum than in the train pipe so air is drawn from a higher to lower pressure and is also exhausted through the pipe
