Inverness 1963

098 324-18 D5122 Inverness station 27-08-63 (John Boyes) 097

This is a historic moment caught on film, they are discussing loading the first vehicles of the new BR MotorBIKErail service from Inverness to London.  You can see the ramp up to the rear of the train, they'll just remove the corridor covers and the bikes can begin loading.

It was a about a week later when some idiot reversed a car up the ramp by mistake and smashed into the back of the coach removing the body from the frame that a BR boffin realised there may be money moving cars on the back of Mk1 coach frames and MotorRail was born.

When going onto a column you always need to have visual markers of where to stop the cab opposite depending on which loco and which way round you are. It seems at least at Sidmouth Junction that something extra was done to help drivers, I assume when the class 2's and 3mt tanks were introduced which were brand new compared to the M7's they had for decades before.

Tipton St. Johns. 30374 taking water. 31.8.58

On a slightly moderner note, now sadly gone, these markers were on the fuelling point wall in Bescot right up until it was demolished when class 66s and the occasional 60 were the only visitors, all other classes were long gone from EWS’ books!

From the Flickr post:

"An unidentified ex-GWR pannier tank and the stock of The Pines Express, including RF M322 in the then-new blue/grey livery, at Oxford, 20-11-65."

The lettering on the side is just another variation of the transition era - Sometimes upper-case, sometimes not and not always in 'Transport' font. Have also seen a good few b/g vehicles, as here, still with the designation '...Car'
