Conspiracy theories

Barking, but some people believe what they want to believe despite all indications to the contrary. We've seen this at play here in the world of model railways with the list of broken promises from DJ Models.

Too wide a list of nonsense on that page, surely a wind-up?

Sadly not - he's well known as a fruitloop in the maritime industry. For one who claims to be a <safety specialist>, he's dangerous.

This, of course, is the one who wrote chapter & verse about how the parbuckling recovery of the Costa Concordia would never work. Reams and reams of guff about it, in fact. All was deleted after the wreck was safely recovered and then broken up. (Not scuttled as he claims).

It certainly is an unintended consequence of the world wide web that such people get a globally accessible soapbox for their nonsense.

I would certainly never have sought it out. Does it show up in search engines for genuine queries (as opposed to searching for conspiracy theories)?

I wonder if it's better to not share the link so he doesn't get more clicks or end up in our browsing history.

He's well known in the maritime world - has been for years - and frankly I don't think that a few of us on here are going to influence search engines.

He really is a bampot.

On this day of all days. The biggest problem with the internet is that now we get to hear all the village idiots at once, The paradox is that the more advanced technology becomes, and the more information we have, the more important it is to use  common sense.

It seems that there is a conspiracy theory behind everything these days.

I think there always has been. The internet (and social media in particular) expands its reach dramatically.

The same with what I'll call anti-society movements. In the old days you'd have to subscribe to snail mail-distributed newsletters (typewritten and mimeographed) to access their nonsense. These days anyone with a connected device can see it immediately - and respond, and send it to their friends!

EDIT

Either that or wander down to places like Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. Even then the audience can shut down a loony. The internet is an immediate global speakers' corner with almost no filter, barring some very specifically illegal content.

Best to ignore them altogether, I chanced on this topic today and their nonsense will only make your day worse.  If you can believe any of it if in sound mind, you've got to be a little nutty as well:fool_mini:!  OTOH, if such rubbish appeals to you, you are in good company from an ex prez of the US on down - he is a past master and has a similarly inclined following!:jester:

...Well, that's what they WANT you to think, certainly...

I think there's someone somewhere in a concrete bunker stroking a cat, thinking up conspiracy theories and putting them on the internet.  Or is that in itself a conspiracy theory?

Ah, we have been expecting you, Mr Bond...

Damn! I’ve been rumbled.

Until you sussed me out @Edwin_m I was certain that all these conspiracy theories would spread and spread and spread… until the “great unwashed” and the “hard-of-thinking” were so addled that they wouldn’t know if they were coming or going - thus allowing me to easily achieve world domination..

Still, I’m still hoping that the huge number of OVIs (On-Line Village Idiots) will drown out the voices of reason and sanity - such as yourself and @brianusa.

If not, I’ve still got a few unused viruses (that may/may not exist) back in my lab.

Most conspiracy theorists are good for a laugh, that one is as my Dad would put it " too silly to laugh at "

I find that there is just so many of them, that it's plain boring, once the initial idea has raised a laugh.

Don't worry, because there is a campaign to have lessons on 'how to spot fake news' taught in schools over the next few years.

So, all we have to do is slap a label "Fake News" on anything we don't agree with, and no one will believe it any more.

For instance "Edward Thompson = destroyer of everything Gresley".... Fake News.

That is that argument sorted.

Conspiracy beliefs, the internet and YouTube.

Just because you are a total wacko. There is no reason that you cannot financially profit from your delusions.
