This was an idea I had last week after a visit to Ludlow Brewery (fantastic) which is located in the former goods shed immediately to the north of the station, and all of one/two minutes’ walk away.

Sorry!

I was going to mention the Prince of Wales at Reigate, but I called in there while on an All Line Rover ticket last year (after my stop it was to Paddington via Reading, in order to catch the Night Riviera to Penzance) and at that point they had no cask ale on offer. I didn’t mind as I went for Spitfire Lager instead, which I enjoy, but if you had gone there especially then you’d be disappointed. This was mid July last year, a few days after the ‘big unlocking’, so perhaps you’ve got to allow for teething troubles after COVID restrictions coupled with contemporary supply chain issues, but there was certainly room for improvement.

Reason I stopped there was for dinner, which for me was a tasty but rather small margherita pizza:

Did you ever visit 'Bertie Belchers Brighton Breezy Brewery, its in Hove Actually' pub outside Hove station?

Been gone many years now but it was in a great brewery and pub. This was it in later years back in 2011 and is still called The Station. There is also the Watchmakers micro just a few doors down the road.

South East

Alton, Hampshire: The Railway Arms - real ale and noticeable by having a 3D Southern loco stuck to the front of the pub. Handy for pre drinks before doing The Watercress Line's real ale train.

Farnborough North: The Prince of Wales - real ale.

North Camp: The Old Ford. (correction). Seem to remember a skittle alley in the room adjacent to the platform. Nice beer garden next to the river.

Owned by Tripple F brewery

Farnborough North: The Prince of Wales - real ale.

Had a job interview in there. Superb pub with regular beer festivals even after the last lockdown. There used to be a closer pub to the station but been turned into a house.

North Camp: The Old Ford. (correction). Seem to remember a skittle alley in the room adjacent to the platform. Nice beer garden next to the river.

Ah yes, thinking of somewhere else. A long time since we have visited.

Thank you once again to everyone who’s contributed, especially Jamie - hope you managed to get to sleep in the end!

I was just wondering if you would be happy for me to share these pubs beyond RMweb, perhaps in the form of an Excel spreadsheet? I’d upload the spreadsheet up on here as well.

Perhaps there ought to be a category for 'most frustrating' pub? One where you can hear the trains pass, but not see them.

I'll nominate 'The Sheet Anchor' at Baldwin's Gate, west of Newcastle under Lyme, right next to the WCML, which regrettably is in a cutting behind an impenetrable Leylandi hedge.

Several on here have mentioned 'The Boathouse' at Wylam; they must have replaced the obscured-glass lower bar windows, as you used to have to stand up to see the trains pass.

Missing the place in the centre!

https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/merseyside/the-north-western-liverpool

I know some don't like 'Spoons, but one of the best places around for a quick drink and has some decent posters/photos. The map above the bar is of the wrong station though as it's L&Y!

The pub opposite Exchange is called The Lion  (not Golden Lion). Named after the locomotive that was the pumping engine at the dock around the corner. Notice the pub sign.

Couple in Birkenhead,  right by Hamilton Square.

Swinging Arm - biker/rock pub

Gallagher's - real ale pub with a very interesting array of military and shipping memorabilia

We don't seem to have mentioned bars on preserved railways, but perhaps that is out of scope. I have always enjoyed my visits to the King & Castle at Kidderminster (SVR).

In the mid/late 70s, a group of us from NSLTC did regular Merrymaker trips, London St P to London Euston via Carnforth. It was supposed to be to travel on the KWVR but we usally ended up in a Tim Taylors pub overlooking the railway about half a mile from Keighley station. Think it was called The Angel. The particular draw was that it was one of two TT pubs to sell the whole range of beers.

Will have to look it up to see if it is still there.
