I’m looking forward to seeing that! How are you thinking if doing the underframe? It might need bogies or two floating axles to get round corners.

Andy

Hello Andy, hope you had a cracking time in Scotland?

Im thinking of trying two floating axles to begin, if not I have mocked up some bogies but im not convinced they dont detract from the original design/look of this van, so want to keep it as original as possible! I think its going to need some weight in this van to keep it on the tracks! I have printed the body section, now to print solebars and roof and see how it looks, hopefully bring it to the club on monday night all being well. :)

Taking the plunge and having a go at weathering some of these 3d printed wagons I knocked up last year.

I have tried a bunch of techniques to see how they work, from airbrushing, weathering powders and washes, and in conclusion they are all quite fun once you get over the scary bit of just diving in!!!

Transfers thanks to Simon at Old Time Workshop

starting to work this 8 wheeled GNR Brake up in 7mm, will see how the wheels work or whether i need to scrap them and build some bogies instead! Ideally prefer not to as it will detract a lot from the original look and feel of these hefty brake vans. Just placed together presently, needs a little more cleaning up in places! plus I have solebars round the wrong way below doh!

I'm also toying with the idea of selling my STL's I have close to 150 now wagons and Coaches, but still wondering the best way to do it?

Cults3D or another online platform might work as a way of selling STLs.  I'm not an expert on the commercial side, though, just someone who's interested in buying and building your fine creations 😃

If bogies turn out to be necessary for the 8-wheeler, can I suggest keeping the W irons fixed, and making inside-framed bogies (such as you might find at the front end of a locomotive)? That way you could have the necessary movement but wouldn't have to have visible bogies, and the rigid outside frame detail would hide the trick!

Linny I can always count on you to come up with great ideas thank you :)

Ok... i got carried away and started painting her up, she stills needs a bit more paint, and the roof isn't fixed yet as I think I will need to add a bit of weight in this puppy if she is to run right on the rails!

The question is.... Will she Run, and I won't know the answer to that sadly probably until next monday when I can get down the club again and test her!

So I have created the two middle wheels on floating axles like I did for the 6 wheeler coaches, however I used peartree solid wheels for those vehicles, which added a lot of ballast/weight to the model, helping it to sit on the rails better! I will try to get some better pics tomorrow when im not legging it out the door!  i may just chuck some transfers on tonight whilst watching a bit of crap TV!!! Crazy I know but i figure if she doesn't run, she can sit looking pretty in a siding somewhere..... While i figure out how to build one that does ;)

What about the two inner axels having flangeless wheels.

Hey Keith another excellent suggestion sir, but does anyone sell flangeless 7mm wheels do you know?

No idea but someone with a lathe probably could do some. Or with your CAD skills could you not produce them in resin. They would need to be set a fraction off the railhead but then fixed to the chassis.

If you’re going flangeless , you could probably 3D print them marginally too small, so that they don’t actually do anything. But I think your plan A is best and failing that the internal bogie. Skinnylinney’s suggestion is what I was trying to explain to you on Monday night.

Thanks folks I hope to check to see how see how she performs on Monday when I get to the club, I have whacked transfers on one side of this model, as I managed to cock up the otherside!!! schoolboy error or what.

I still haven't fixed the roof yet until I have properly weighted her inside all being well she runs!!

Anyway I am waiting for the arrival of new transfers and then I can finish this brake, and weather it a bit to fit in with the rest of the wagons.

Also printed this GNR 5plk last week and been painting it up, still needs some more subtle weathering work before I can call it finished

Next up I have some printing of LBSCR Billinton goods brakes for Peter at the club so need to pull my finger out and get the CAD up to scratch before I print them

Cheers

More ropey cold weather preventing me from cracking on with more printing! I did get a bit of a run before the cold spell and managed to rattle off a GC 3plk, LSWR Meat van and a couple of LBSC 5plks, but sadly the snow has put the kabosh on my GCR fishvan :(

In the meantime some updated and new models in 7mm to get printing come the better weather.

4 wheel Billinton Brake is a for a friend at the club, and the 6 wheeler which is slightly wider is for my growing 7mm collection

I have experimented with using zbrush for creating extra detail on the bolster plank, with a couple of splits, and rough timber details

Now I need to get some 4mm stock ready for @BlueLightning :)

So how long does it take you to draw up one of these wagons, you seem to spit out one a day, with an incredible level of detail.

Haha I wish Stephen.... Nahh it normally takes about 2-3 nights depending on the complexity of the vehicle or on the amount of shared components i can rip from other wagons like Axle boxes and brake gear etc!  Then another evening getting ready it for the printer!

Though these wagons are not as exciting as your recent GWR coach work sir, I have been enjoying following your endeavours on that, and they are shaping up rather lovely.... 7mm versions? ;)

That's still pretty good progress, from start to print. I takes me about the same time in days, and I'm retired!

I would need a very large printer to do 7mm coaches, and some redrawing to add in more detail, as things like handrails would work in 7mm. Might be able to print 6 wheelers on the Mono X.

Had a cracking time down at the South East O gauge group this afternoon, and got to see some lovely stock running around their impressive test track!

I also managed to test out the 8 wheel GNR brake and i'm super chuffed to say she runs pretty good for a basic sliding pair of axles underneath!

Just finished getting these two STL's ready in 4mm for this set of LBSC Ballast wagons/brake for the lovely Mr Bluelightning aka Gary. Hopefully he will be printing these in his fantastic shop so do get in touch with him if they might tickle your fancy! If there are any other of my wagons folks might be interested in 4mm please ping Gary and let him know, and we can try and sort it out :)

Oh Rob! Now this is very exciting!

Once I've got test prints done and am happy my machine prints them well they will appear on https://www.oakhillworks.co.uk/ (You'll notice I need new photos for pretty much everything, as they are all awaiting painting IRL!!)
