What is this Black Friday thing??

Quote from Wikipedia.

"Black Friday is a colloquial term for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States. It traditionally marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States. Many stores offer highly promoted sales at discounted prices and often open early, sometimes as early as midnight or even on Thanksgiving."

In the UK it has also become the refuge of many businesses who rely on discounting to attract business. Major discount retailers, including those who operate solely online, are also known to raise prices before Black Friday so that they can then offer a BF discount. Caveat Emptor applies!

It's called Black Friday specifically as it's the point in the year that everything the shop sells from that date on is profit - before then their turnover goes towards stock, rent, wages, taxes etc. I.e. they move from the red into the black.

There's something similar that I forget the name that signifies the approximate point that you havepaid all your income tax etc. for the year - the rest is all yours.

Very easy to pick holes in the above but I think that's the basis of it.

That's what my wife said the morning. There are a number of reasons given for the origin of Black Friday, as an online search shows.

It also fits with the dealership sales philosophy I learned of, on a trip to the USA, when working for General Motors, many years ago. They aimed at a minimum profit per new car sale, until they had covered their annual overheads. After that it was literally sell it for a dollar profit if you had to, just to make the sale. Of course, that probably resulted in getting higher volume unit sales bonuses from the manufacturer.
