Unlit Passenger Platforms

Going on a bit of a tangent, back in day when I was working at Totnes, we had a leading railman who was an ex-signalman from Brent Box who had a rather 'economical' attitude to the use of platform lighting. When he was on middle turn, passengers would be waiting under the dim light of two lamps and when the 'Cardiff' ran in at 1825 the remaining lights would be switched on 'plink..plink..plink' as it ran in and the he would extinguish the lights in the same manner during departure!

As a signalman he'd be used to working with most of the lights off.  Under AB you need to be able to see the tail lamp of passing trains, and it's much easier to see if your eyes have got adjusted to the dark.  The only light you really need is for writing entries in the register.  Very considerate of him to extend the same courtesy to train crews!

I believe the late Queen had a bit of a reputation for saving the taxpayers money by wandering round Buck House at night switching off the lights in all the empty rooms.

Before it became a manned  station the lights at Greenfield station were on a timer would only come on for morning and evening rush hours worked well untill local yoof found the timer dial box could be easily opened and altered .many a late turn would have to stroll down from the signalbox to re set as the station was in darkness at 4.30 pm .
