Oh wow, saw NIU had these in the pipeline, they really look good. Once the lads are in position in them wagons itl be a stand out train.

Top work as ever Darius.

Initial painting of the figures.  They were given an overall spray of khaki and then details were painted using the end of a cocktail stick - even the finest brush is too coarse.

Once the paint has dried overnight, shadows and highlights will be picked out using a dark wash - sparingly applied.

Fast work there with an excellent result.

Someone asked on Facebook if the armoured wagons would be available separately but there was no reply. I will email Niu as I would be interest in having the train without the loco as part of my diorama and the overall cost of the kit and chassis is rather high for me just to create a static model.

Nice work, a question would there not have been Ready Use Lockers, in the wagon with the guns?

The photos arising from a Google image search appear to show loose ammunition boxes in the gun compartment but not fixed lockers.  Presumably this would be ammunition for the 6 pounder guns.  The photos also show what appear to be bundled up tarpaulin sheet at the rear of the same compartment.

Cheers

No doubt Wilson & Mainwaring are on the footplate arguing about how to drive it.

Private Pike on the left, Fraser on the right?  Obviously not Jones as he's not fitted his bayonet!

Congrats on an excellent paint job.

Train completed.  I added Lanarkshire Models tail lamps to the gun trucks.

Why three headlamps on the front of the train?  Was there a special lamp code for such trains?

I would have thought they probably didn't run under normal signalling procedures but under a possession.

Would you want lamps at all?  Oil lamps would be inadequate to see the line ahead in the dark, and it is a disdvantage if your precise location can be seen by the enemy.

Photos of the train on Google Images show the trucks with three lamps and sometimes with a single central lamp.  I am not sure what the significance is of the number of lamps but I followed suit with the model - three lamps at one end and a single lamp at the other.  A lot of the contemporary photos are clearly “posed” with the occupants looking suitably fearsome and aggressive, “Picture Post” style, so are probably not representative of the actual service condition.

I received a very prompt and positive response from Niu about just purchasing the two gun trucks and have sent my Paypal payment to them. I will using open wagons already in my ownership to create the train.
