A good few months ago, I started to draw up a Jinty for 1/120 in the hope that making a chassis wouldn't be too demanding, but I put the project aside to get other things completed. Now I've gone down the route of actually completing the design work so all parts can be produced to make a fully working model. The body is going to be sold as a kit of parts, but the chassis will be sold and available via Thingiverse so anyone can attempt further TT locomotives. I plan on changing wheelbase to offer several suitable generic 0-6-0 chassis for various locomotives.

Progress so far on chassis design, not much to show. 3mm Society 12mm wheels are being incorporated due to availability and ease. I've roughly modelled my chosen motor, this one, roughly in place so I can work out gears and mounting locations. Will have more to show within the next few weeks but it's coming along at a rate I'm happy with.

Wasn't the Jinty on the list of locos Simon Kohler stated were in the pipeline for Hornby?

Is there an alternative that might not be on Hornby's radar?

Just a thought

I’m one of those rare people who will wish to build a kit or scratch build even if a RTR model is available 😊 The chassis being made open source on its own, with anyone being able to download the CAD files to print their own parts, will surely give people several alternatives not under Hornby’s radar.

A fantastic idea - I wish you all the best with it and will keep an eye out. I could very easily be tempted…

Thank you, at the moment I’m ordering parts and pricing up items to make a shopping list for building these items. Won’t be cheap but certainly won’t cost the same as a Hornby loco.

What gear train do you have in mind? Direct worm to drive wheel?

I’m designing two versions, a direct worm to drive version as above and one using a N20 motor on advice from a friend, making a gearbox of sorts along with it to give an alternative option.

When the files for the chassis are out there, there is no reason why someone can’t tweak them to adapt it for another motor or gearing.

It's not in  the brochure. And there were plenty of MR 0-6-0s and 0-6-0Ts that shared that basic chassis

Does anyone know if there is a list of wheelbase dimensions and wheel diameters, not just for MR locos, but for many railway companies? I'm sure there is information scattered across the web (e.g. Wikipedia) but don't know of a web site with a comprehensive list. Such a list could prove useful for anyone wanting to use or design for a generic chassis.

For now I’ve put the Jinty on the back burner but have gone down the Terrier route, amazingly a Farish Hall does lend itself into being reasonably close to a Terrier in TT in almost all aspects (wheelbase, wheel size) bar gauge.

14.75mm long axles, 1.5mm plasticard spacers and a little bit of work later gives me this. I’m still doing the driven axle and pickups but if it all works I’ll be doing further conversions.

  • Vanguard 5374 changed the title to The SpannerShed - CAD work and relevant modelling for 1/120 scale

A few projects I have in the go, all of which are being developed as body kits for 1/120 modellers:

Are these to be made printed or available as STL file for rescaling and home print?

Having been stung in the past selling STL files for home printing with a non commercial license and then seeing prints of those models sold by a “business”, I will not be sharing any STL files. I’ll be supplying kits directly to those wishing to model 1/120.

Would consideration be given for re scale and supply the range to 3mm scale 1:101?

With time I may supply some items as 1/101.3 for the TT3 modeller but my main focus is 1/120.

Cruel closeups of the Sentinel I am working on for 1/120, including dummy chassis. Few bits to tweak and few areas to modify before release but I’m mostly happy - what do you think so far? Conventional locomotives will follow this one 👀

Another model going for test printing, meanwhile I’ve purchased some chassis from Halling in order to make my locos motorised. If money allows I may purchase a few Hornby locos to cannibalise
