Whilst tidying some drawers, I came across some negatives, and having no clue what they were, so I bought a scanner. I discovered they were 126 film photos from when I was about 14 - 16 travelling around with Northern Counties Transport Society, odd trips with friends and an all line rail rover. There are some locations that I know, some that I could guess at and some where I have no idea. This is also a warts and all post, so there may be some where there is no chance of identifying locations.

 

First up will be some where I don't know the location, but might have an idea based on surrounding negatives on the same strip.

 

Power station somewhere in the NW of England, definitely not Kearsley (no OLE) but similar position (Suggested Agecroft - I tend to agree)

 

Somewhere in Scotland? No! Skipton!

 

Absolutely no idea, but it is being demolished. Rose Grove. (I'm officially an idiot for not recognising it.)

Could it be Agecroft Colliery?  That looks like one of their RSH 0-4-0ST.

My first thought - but the buildings don't seem to match those I photographed on my one visit ( just before closure ).

Of course it is, but this makes me wonder just how old I was when I took this being as how steam finished Aug 1968 and this looks like beyond the end.

York? Yes, confirmed.

 

I think approaching Wigan North Western from the north? Yes, confirmed

 

Could these be Toton? No. Doncaster Carr Loco for the first one. No confirmation on the 2nd one.

 

 

Absolutely not a clue. I can't even work out whether it is a diesel hydraulic or diesel electric. (Is that the Tay bridge in the background?)  Confirmed Montrose.

Might it be somewhere former LSWR/SR? Wadebridge, Padstow, Fremington, Barnstaple Town are all riverside locations, but none look right to me.

That's a possibility but there are probably too many tracks ( and former signal options ) for those locations .... and the number of 'phone lines suggest somewhere a bit more main lineish.

 

........ how about Montrose ?

As spotted by Wickham Green that class 21 or 29 is at Montrose.

 

Here is a view of that distinctive bracket signal, looking the other way, on 20/7/74.

I think it's a Class 29 as it appears to have the white line between the two greens applied to most of the class.

This picture on Flickr by Mike Taylor is dated December 1974.

 

Track had gone by then, and building was demolished presumably early 1975.

I think I've sussed one out that has had me thinking that I should know where it is. If I'm right I guess the reason for struggling is because of the changes that have happened. Leeds City approaching from the Leeds and Wortley Line? 

 

No! Manchester / Salford. The rusty lines on the right lead into Manchester Exchange, Threlfall's brewery and chimney standout landmarks.

Could a skilled photoshopper do some skilled photoshoppery on the suspected Hydraulic to bring out a little more detail, or are we happy that it is Montrose?

Also, thinking about it, the Leeds and Wortley is only 2 track. The sign on the bridge is Ribble Cement.
