Hi all

I have an ESU 3.5 sound decoder installed, it worked fine but very quiet so I've installed a base reflex 100 ohm speaker, all sounds sound fantastic now but the only problem is the locomotive doesn't run at all. I can't see any loose wires has anybody any idea what could be wrong.

Before suspecting the decoder to be at fault , you could detach it and reinsert the DC plug and test it on DC assuming you have a DC controller.

If it doesn't move on DC, a motor wire or  pick up may be detached.

As you've probably had the decoder in and out of the loco, possibly even soldering new speaker wires onto the decoder, and now have sound (track power in to the decoder is OK) but no movement I suspect the issue is with the wiring from the decoder to the motor.  Although Albie's suggestion above is definitely the first step to check.

Some V3.5s have extremely thin and fragile wiring, and I have had to completely rewire some.  Take a close look at the orange and grey wires to make sure they look intact and the soldered joints at each end are still in good order.

Thank you for all your kind replies, yes it works okay on DC but then I found two wires have come off the decoder but I don't know where to attach them.

Caveat: I haven't done this before, so if you don't feel confident, I suggest you wait for a more seasoned voice to chime in. With that said:

This looks like the manual.

From the diagram on page 5, and going from the orientation of your photo, it looks like orange goes to the bottom row leftmost pin, and blue goes to second from the left on the top row.

But I'd love to hear from others too, to see if this is indeed the fix.

The orange wire is one of the motor wires and is usually classed as pin No 1 .

Given that wire has come away , it's no surprise the locomotive doesn't move !

A quick scan of the Internet will show you the layout  of the wires on an 8 pin plug .

The blue wire is the common positive as is used for lights usually
