Thread started especially for MJI 😜

Opened the box to find this is a 4-GRI rather than a 4-COR.

The heavy gauge brass coach bodies will need some “bashing” to get the correct bodyside profile.

I plan to make new coach ends and possibly cabs from plasticard.

I will replace the MTK bogies with spare Bachmann and Hornby bogies.

All back in the box for now…

Cheers

Looking forward to this one. It is a unit I would like to model in 3D one day. It’s a pity that the late Colin Parks thread will not be available it would give you lots of information.

As soon as i have got my eyes sorted i am going to have to finish my 120

I am wondering if a craft cutter could do the SR EMUs

That's a later MTK kit with the brass bodyshells and etched door reliefs. I'm just finishing off a 4 CEP from that era of MTK kit - previously built and painted but it came to me un-numbered and missing some details.

That W&H models price tab brings back happy memories of nipping over to Marylebone to their shop at lunchtimes to pick up kits  and bits  and bobs.

I've used one to make pre-grouping carriages, so don't see any reason why EMU's couldn't be done with one.

Impressive speed, @Darius43
Faster and neater than my work, by a mile.

I do really fancy one of these. I have strong memories of getting the train to do our Saturday shopping in Reading when I was very small, and the sudden change to 4-CIGs over Easter 1972. (I still think of those units as ‘Easter Specials’ 52 years on!

I've built a Tadpole that way, and have a 4-BUF nearly finished:

It's a good way to scratchbuild coaches.

My 120 is craft cut, i ought to finish it

I’m using Bachmann Bulleid bogies in place of the MTK offerings.

I wonder what era that price tag belongs to?

Until fairly recently I'd a Western kit that I acquired from a swapmeet in 1993 which had a W&H price label for £12.50. I often wondered how old that was.

Coach end details fitted.  A mixture of MTK cast parts plasticard bits and brass wire.  I also fitted Roxey Mouldings brass grab rails and MJT handles to each door.

I always enjoy your threads Darius, you deserve a special place in folklore for wrestling with all these MTK kits.  Or a padded cell.

Whilst placing the Buffet/Griddle coach body next to the Composite coach that I have assembled I noticed that it is 6mm longer (essentially a scale 1.5 feet longer).

The composite and driving motor coach bodies are all the same length and scale out close* to the 63’6” length of the prototype coaches.

I can find no information on the web that the Buffet/Griddle coach was longer than the other coaches in the unit so this would appear to be another “gift” from Mr MTK.

The question is: do I live with this or take a 6mm slice out of the Buffet/Griddle coach body to make it the correct length?

* close enough for MTK.

Cheers

Just checked the other MTK 4-COR (actually a 4-BUF) kit that I have and the Buffet coach body is 3mm longer than the others in that one.

I have looked a bit more into the logistics of cutting and shutting the brass body of the Buffet/Griddle car and the resultant weakening of the body.  Getting two clean and parallel cuts and a decent strength connection of the subsequent “halves” is too great a risk to take.

The coach will be longer than the others and only I and anyone else reading this thread will be the wiser…

Cheers
