So I suspect it is all a bit like the 60s, where they say that “if you remember the 60s you weren’t there” So the fact that you don’t remember doing those things is prima facie evidence that you actually did do those things. Can you explain further? Are you referring to the comment about George Orwell style (commented upon above)? Or are you referring to the fact that you may or may not consider it thought provoking fiction? I have been doing nothing of the sort. It is possibe that I have been inadvertently misusing the term "parallel universe" in the absence of one more apposite and if that be the case I am sorry. What I have been trying to do, clearly with less than the success desired, is to list events in the forthcoming week which will not now take place on account of that ruddy virus. I am not wallowing in nostalgia, or anything else for that matter. If I thought for one moment that any friends and gentle readers were at all critical of what I write, have written or may yet write, I would expect them to keep their own counsel, as I do. RMweb Premium TheQ Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 7, 2020 I remember the 1960s, but for those of us living in small villages out in the countryside, it was a very different world, probably more like the " official " 1950s and time went backwards moving to the Hebridies in 1971. By 1976 I was marching around in circles in basic training followed by trade training , a distinct lack of females, were visible or available.. Ben has been walked in the rain, the rest of the battery plates are now drained and drying. It is I think, time to see, if eyelids are still working..

RMweb Premium Popular Post Dave Hunt Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) In 1968 I was posted to Tengah in Singapore to my first Squadron. If you thought the miniskirts in UK were short, the ones most Brit girls wore out there were more like wide belts. Quite disturbing for a young lad, especially as tights weren't in evidence. RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 7, 2020 As a Fleetwood Mac track was featured earlier and Rhiannon was in danger of becoming an earworm I decided to listen to the album it was from. I do have the vinyl but it isn’t in the ready use pile so is playing from the stereo via AirPlay from my iPad. Now playing something else ChrisF would probably identify quite quickly, though I don’t think even at full power my stereo could reach Bedford. It is now lunchtime. I did suggest as we had a late breakfast we could miss out lunch. Poor Aditi looked quite upset. Not a good idea to suggest missing a meal! 10

No. It's taken a little longer than he thought. But the level of surveillance that we are now living under goes way beyond what was predicted in the book. The difference is that most of it is not done by the Government but by private commercial interests. 8

Before I put the straw down, t seemed that more grass had grown in the strawberry patch than on the lawn, so weeding it took a long time, and my back is now rather stiff as a result. No more gardening this afternoon! 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 7, 2020 1968 - hmm the year in which I became redundant for the first time. Although that wasn't as bad as it sounds because it was technical redundancy due to me not being the occupant of a minuted post, or for a while any other post, but before actually becoming the permanent occupant of such a post I was 'gainfully employed' carrying out a review of seniority and official, as opposed to actual, occupation of posts for all Signalmen and Relief Signalmen on the London Division of the WR which was in fact a lot more interesting than it might sound. Then I wasn't redundant again until the end of 1973 having managed 5 permanent jobs, one acting job and one temporary job (including several promotions) in between and. once again it was technical redundancy and it only lasted a few weeks during which time I was in any case still covering the temporary job (on full day & night expenses plus overtime ). Then, following another promotion, I managed to get to 1975 before becoming redundant once again but that was due to a reorganisation of responsibilities so in reality I just changed from one lot of responsibilities to another, at the same location, once all the paperwork had been sorted and signed. Oddly, although not particularly unusually on BR, in my next two redundancies - several years on and in different jobs more than 10 years apart - I managed to get a promotion out of them but both of these were very real redundancies. The next redundancy was also a real one but entirely voluntary and was when I finally left the big railway, from an EG post. Redundancy can sometimes have a silver lining although it's not like that for everybody 16 3

RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 7, 2020 More Scalextric cars have appeared in the forum ad now. A green one that I didn’t recognise the make of. I thought perhaps a Ford Focus but in fact an Aston-Martin. Easy mistake to make. 7

Fast forward some 17 years and Heidi (she was 5ft 13ins, required an outfit for her to wear to front a "rock band" My mother had made an outfit for my wife to wear in 1968 and it was offered now. "Is it the real thing?" asked Heidi and the reply was "We wore it then and I could never find a belt to wear", replied the wife. By the way, I always did like the Mk1 mini skirts with stockings the girls wore. The Mk 2 with tights was not so good with no "laughing bands"

Popular Post Sir TophamHatt
Hmm. So this isn't great. Next door (rented) smokes weed most weekends. New baby + the good weather means we've been spending a lot more time outside = not great as it honks the whole area. Reported to the police and they went round to advise. I'm quite against drugs but if he wants to smoke on his way home from work or in the house, down the bottom of the garden, crack on! Yesterday, music on quite loud, nearly all day, which is very unlike them. Today, music from 10am until about 12, now it's started again from about 3pm (it's 4pm now). Yet the guy is outside (doors to the house closed) pressure washing the patio Petty pay back (not that the police would've said who reported it and a kids play park is at the end of our gardens). It pleases me to know that my speaker system can be much, much louder but we're gonna ride it out for the week.

RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) Pouring with rain again. An over the road neighbour has chosen the wrong weekend to repaint his garage door. It isn’t getting wet due to the roof overhang but it can’t be much fun. I damaged a bit of Scalextric track yesterday and did a “repair”. Seems ok now and cars that were getting stuck (which is how I damaged the track, “adjusting it) now longer get stuck. I won’t be re-enacting Le Mans next week but could perhaps manage 24 minutes rather than 24hours. Edited June 7, 2020 by Tony_S
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) A warm welcome to two new ER's, Florence Locomotive Works and Johnny Wass. Having worked in South Leeds I read that as Tommy Wass, a famous Pub on Dewsbury Road. We look forward to hearing more from you both. If you can stand the sense of humour you'll do well. However we are generally a very supportive bunch. The one thing we try not to talk about, not always successfully, model railways. AndyID
Odd that ye olde Land Rover is now defunct. Jeep are cranking out Wranglers like mad. SiL just bought one and MrsID is on her second. They still retain the original fold-forward windshield. MrsID's Wrangler is quite basic. No power anything except steering although this one is an automatic. BTW, the original Land Rover design was based on the Jeep. 17
