Southern S class 0-6-0 Saddle Tank

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a Hornby J52 at a bargain price, a cracking little runner and well detailed bodywork. One of my favourite playpen activities is the detailing or modest conversion of RTR locos and in a rash moment wondered if there was any potential in using this loco as a basis for representing the sole class S saddle tank? This was converted from a SEC C class tender loco in 1917 by Maunsell for shunting duties and I believe spent most of its life at Bricklayers Arms before withdrawal in 1951.Problem is cannot find any pictures or plans!I have trawled through my "Southern"books and Googled well with no success.I wonder if any kind soul could suggest any source of more details? Many thanks.Tim.

There are a couple of photos plus plans on pp61 and 62 of 'A Pictorial Record of Southern Locomotives' by J.H. Russell, published by OPC, ISBN 0 86093 443 8.

I'm pretty sure this book can be obtained through the library system.

Hi Tim,

there is a very nice 3/4 view of the righthand side in the Bradford Barton book - Southern Steam Locomotive Survey - the Wainwright ClassesISBN 0-85153-344-2 page 17, which could be particularly useful. send me a PM if you cannot get hold of a copy - the book is no doubt long out of print.

regards

Mike

Just to get you started, there are a couple of photos of models to be found at http://www.crphillips-models.co.uk/srmodelspage6.html and http://www.sefinecast.co.uk/Locomotives/New%20and%20Revised%20Loco%20Kits%20Page%205.htm as SE Finecast make a kit. I also found this reference http://www.kettlesgalore.fotopic.net/c1789730.html but I am at work and the thought police won't let me check fotopic.

My initial thoughts are that the S has a "proper" round saddle tank whereas the J52 has straight sides, which may make things difficult.

Wasn't the old Tri-ang saddle tank based on the S class but over height to accomodate a clockwork mechanism, always toyed with cutting one down to correct height.

D'you know, I reckon youm absolutely spot on. Looking at the photos that Mike has kindly PMd to me, the Triang loco is a very fair representation.Looking at the J52, a new cab and replacement(lower) boiler fittings, that won't be far off either.Good init! Best wishes, Tim.

Tim,

A converted Wainwright 'C' class 0-6-0 tender engine - hasn't some one like '00 Works' brought out a rtr version of the C, so try the manufacturers to see if they would supply a loco minus tender, and fabricate saddle tanks, and bunker, or get some one like Kevin Trim to do it for you.

Paul

ps Good to see you at Blandford on Saturday, sorry I didn't have time for a longer chat.

Hi Tim

This looks like an intersting and feasible project.

I think that most of the photographic references in the more mainstream SR related publications have been mentioned.

I look forward to seeing the progress you make with the conversion, and how you go about it, please keep us posted.
