Where can I buy switches

I was reading some old (1940's) Model Railway Constructor Magazines, and a particular panel wiring system used 3-way/ 3-(or 4) pole CO toggle switches, apparently Air Ministry surplus from aircraft cockpits. I would like to replicate the wiring but can only find rotary switches with these particular attributes. Are toggle switches still available anywhere?

Just trying to get my head round a 3-way toggle switch - unless you include a centre-off as 1-way.

A 4-pole co toggle is available and I'm sure I have one somewhere. Have you tried the usual sources Maplins, All Component, ...

Yes, this is exactly what it is: I was using the terminology from the original article! I've tried Maplins without success, although as I said they do do a rotary switch, which I'm beginning to think I will have to use. To me, turning a switch doesn't seem as good as clicking one down for some reason!

Thanks for your help.

  • RMweb Gold

JPR Electronics sell the 4-pole centre-off switches.

JPR Switches

Bear in mind they have a £30 minimum order (excluding VAT) but post-free after that. They do also sell those 100m reels of layout wire that we use so much of. ;)

JPR certainly look the cheapest, even if not at "war surplus" prices!

Thank you so much to everybody who replied. Just shows that RM Web is so much better than Google when you are trying to find something specialised!

what are the toggle switches on/off/on for points motors called?

Hi

If they are for operating solenoid point motors, then you need to obtain the sprung to centre off style.

Often referred to as (On)-Off-(On) type.

Where the bracketed (On) cannot remain in that position once the toggles lever is released.

I have built a couple of MSE signals, using their solenoid(SM7) to power them.I need to know what sort of switch to use to operate them,SPST or DPDT and where to wire them to the tags.My layout is DC.

I would appreciate any help, even a diagram to show me how to do it,At the moment, the signal arm moves, but is noisey and vibrates,

Hope some one can put me out of my misery!

Warren
