Is the field dry yet? Anyone know the long range forecast? :)

The BBC is forcasting heavy showers for saturday http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2302?area=Watford. The main car park is tarmac, as I said there is other car parking the other side of the main building leading to the sports hall. No parking restrictions on the road other than outside the school gates as it is out of town.

The field will be a bit wet as there was a downpoor last thursday and we had showers on sunday. I dont think parking will be a problem though, have a chat with a parking steward.

Quoting Robert Plant - "Satan thy kingdom must come down" (note to self - must bring wallet... must bring wallet ... repeated ad nauseam)

Oh and just noticed the directions - "...Ask for the Crematorium" - so that's my bank balance up in smoke then

Pity no High Level, but then it is a hell of a hack down to Watford from up there....

Ivan,

I see that David Geen isn't coming either. I believe that both he and Chris Gibbons (High Level) have difficulty understanding the local accent.

Unfortunately the weather forecast for saturday morning is heavy rain (but dry on Sunday).

Will Kenton make it to the show?. Will Horsetan be spattered in mud as well as having a horsey aroma?

Seriously, does any one remember what the catering is like (I can't recall from last year, must have been pre-occupied with other things  ).

Here is a sneak preview of some of the layouts which are at the show. Sorry about the lack of stock on the layouts

Unfortunately the weather forecast for saturday morning is heavy rain (but dry on Sunday).

Will Kenton make it to the show?.

The tardis landed in the field :( arriving just too late to get a spot on the gravel. (it was a bit of a disappointing free for all, with a lot of really daft parking - cars occupying space enough for two - could have been better organised, I think)

The show was very civilised with many polite "excuse me" and "sorry" and "you first". I was not trodden on once or pushed or poked with rucksacks. Even though I was at the busiest time (opening to 1300) there seemed to be plenty of space to get to see everything.

Didn't get everything I wanted (well not all the traders were there that I needed). It would have been nice to have AG - where else can you get wheels for another new kit (that was unfortunate having Judith Edge standing right in front of the entrance - walk in ... contemplate where to go next ... can I help you? ... can't avoid it, would be rude not to  So came away with mixed feelings on the spend front and with quite a few notes left over for the next show - Abingdon.

The layouts were of a very high caliber and included some I had not seen before:

- Nant-y-glo for some reason just captivated me so much detritus in such a small space really well modeled and very "dark".

- Hurculaneum Dock very good. While standing there wondering why on the elevated section the trains were running against the crossover points (waiting for an almighty derailment or a death on a frog, an elderly gent regailed me with the history of of the prototype and how realistic the layout was to his memory.

- Wantage - I've selected this one for the smooth running, not that it was alone, it was just impeccable at the time I was watching.

- Millanford - This was another that seemed to be operating really well - though I could detect 'L' plates on the operator :) It gives a very good feeling of space for what is really a BLT.

- Cornwallis Yard - I'm afraid I was disappointed - I just couldn't see the point in converting this lovely model into a big roundy roundy. Just not needed and a total waste of space. The model itself remains outstanding - just put it back in the old format.

There were lots of other good layouts as well.

Anyway, a very friendly atmosphere and well organised. Perhaps my only gripe being my old favourite complaint about spending £1 on a guide that has not one single layout plan - I feel swindled as the only useful thing left in there was a show plan that could have been printed on a sheet of A4 and put up around the building. I really don't know why I gave in to the "buy one or else" mobbing on the front door.

I'm glad I made the effort - even though it will be a long time before the grass grows again where I landed my machine.

Is the Pope a Catholic? It was Glastonbury out there!!

The one thing I really miss from the old days at Tolpits Lane is the spread of homemade cakes.

The best thing about this year's show was the very limited hot meals menu. Spot the spelling error.....or was it an error?

A very good show. Just a lack of any recently released RTR.

I also came across the Numpties in the car park.

Attended an excellent lecture by Jim Connor on the architecture of the North London Railway.

There's another one on Sunday on old East London stations. Surprised that there were not more people at this as it was a fairly local subject.

Tried to buy some flat files. These seem to have gone out of fashion and according to the chap on Eilleen's are going to cost over a tenner when he can get a new source.

Sadly was working most of the day and only caught the last 2 hours, most of which was on the front desk. Here are a few photos with stock on.

Plenty of good feedback from the public and sundays in the past is the quieter of the 2 days, so a bit more space in the car parks and more room to move arround. 10 am to 4.30 pm adults £5 each accompanied children under 16 free.

I will pass on the comments on to the exhibition manager, thanks for all the feedback. I will try and spend some money tomorrow.

If you're within range I'd recommend going tomorrow if you didn't today.

Though I don't model either British prototype or in finescale I still came away with plenty of ideas and tips and spent a lot longer at the show than I'd planned- always a good sign. Being a somewhat specialist show and not too crowded allowed a lot more interaction with layout builders and others than at a show aimed more at the general public. As it was probably my last chance to see several layouts that are about to be rebuilt or replaced the chance to take a much closer look was much appreciated.

I'd also like to thank Phil McGovern for stepping in at the last minute with his session on 7mm buildings. Even though I model in half that scale I took away several useful ideas not least the use of the drawing tools in Word that I'd never considered before. That did lead me to wonder, not for the first time, whether offering workshops and talks might be a useful thing for other clubs to consider as well though I appreciate it might be an extra layer of organsiation. I think the High Wycombe show did it in 2009 and Leytonstone had a useful workshop on weathering last year. it seems good for a show to help encourage modelling rather than just getting as many of the public through the doors as possible.
