looks well at Beresford! Hope you get lots of enjoyment from Demelza!

Tonight I put the DCC chip in Demelza - and after realizing it was the wrong way round (no lights) put in the right way. Strange Heljan don't mark pin 1.

It's also now all run in, as is 70006 finally! - I could never get hold of a 21 pin DCC, so have got a 8 to 21 converter from Gaugemaster (about £3 I think).

The downside is that I've now realised that because 70006 is so long it fouls on the parallel track on a couple of the corners - I don't fancy ripping up all the track just yet, so will just have to be careful with the timetabling.

I've now also run out of cork and hanging basket liner for the new area, so off to the shops again...

Cheers

Phil

suppose you could always use the 70 on the outer track?

Hi Dan

Yes you're probably right - there were some Bachmann container wagons parked on the outer track on the bend in the tunnel (not a usual situation), they stuck out a bit themselves, and just caught 70006 as it skimmed by.

The outer track is supposed to be the freight track with the inner as mainly passenger, so should be OK.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi All

I thought I'd celebrate the new look RMWeb by giving a bit of a progress (or lack of it) update.

I've moved onto the larger area of the layout and started some terraforming.

As you can see plenty of work still to do, and not much time at the moment...

I think I'm also going to need quite a lot of hanging basket liner.

Now the cat is out of the bag as it were, I hope to post more updates.

Enjoy,

Phil

Keep them coming - I noticed this number painted on the sleeper of a point and thought I might have a go doing something similar. It also appeared to have some kind of device (the yellow screw thing at the bottom of the picture) from stopping the point being thrown.

I've only just seen this; the device you mention is a point clip. It is applied when a set of points are secured out of use (either temporarily or permanently); behind the far point blade can be seen a piece of wood called a scotch which stops the open blade from moving. The point clip can be secured (and usually is) with a padlock to stop it being removed by an unathorised person.

The other yellow item in the further track is a tie bar; it used to keep the rails to gauge when the sleepers aren't doing their job properly! It's painted yellow so any passing Tamping Machine Operators know what to aim for :P

Thanks, I hadn't even spotted that. I'll put it on my list of things to model when I have a spare moment.

Morning all,

I've just been down to check how the plaster was drying and found this - which explains a lot

The cat (Poppy) was lying on top of the sheep and the fence posts, which can't have been that comfortable you would have thought.

Obviously the HBL is so realistic she think's it's real grass.

One issue I have had is that for some reason the plaster that I've been using to build up the banks has been behaving strangely - I think it's somehow gone off - it's still not dry after a week and has started to crack, as you can see below.

I suspect I'm going to have to rip it all up and start again - one step forward and all that.....

Cheers

don't worry about cracking plaster, i had a layout where it did that.

just use water based paint with pva added to cover it and it will be fine, can add scatter as the paint stars to dry and itsticks and covers cracks

I've just done a bit of research and it appears that plaster has a sell by date, and mine had gone past. Apparently old plaster sets rapidly and then has a loss of strength/adhesion because the calcium gets depleted when stored.

Most advice is to chuck it out, which would probably be right if you'd been using it on your lounge wall, however I'm sure it'll be fine as a bit of embankment.

You learn something every day,

The Americans would hold weekend modelling clinics on how to achieve realistic water erosion on embankments!

Ian, I'm liking your positive approach :).

I've applied plenty of PVA and a bit of HBL over the top now and seems to be OK.

I might try some weather erosion at the other end.

Do you want me to check my local stores?? Are there different types of HBL or is it one type??

Hi Scott

Thanks for the offer. That was at Homebase, Farnham, as I happened to be passing, so a few more to try before waiting till spring, by which time I'll have changed my mind and won't need it anyway. :O
