Collett 60' and Hawksworth coaches - latest dates for use

Hi, I have searched but can't find the information I need. I have inherited a couple of rakes of Bachmann and Mainline Collett 60' coaches in maroon livery and wonder what the latest date these would have been in use. Likewise I now have a rake of Hornby Hawksworth maroon coaches and wonder if I can use either on my model railway which is set around 1965.

I think you are OK until 64 at least - latest pic I can remember in maroon is in a motor-rail train in 64 - but there were certainly a few blue & grey ones around until the late 60s

Hawksworth stock is fine for 1965, though it would largely have been demoted to relief sets, summer dated services and some secondary workings by then. Most if not all had gone by 1967-8. Collett stock would probably have gone a bit earlier.

Good on you for trying - and saying sogood_mini.gif There might be something of interest in this query thread of mine - which incidentally I couldnt find on my first search, using 'Hawksworth' plus my own usernamehuh.gif

I'd agree with the consensus on Colletts, they were definitely around in 1962 but I think '64 would probably be pushing it

Of partial relevance to this and other recent threads, this shot on a site linked to by pH in another thread is of interest. Unfortunately I can't get the pic to enlarge in the usual way, but it looks to me that at least the first three, and probably the fourth and fifth, vehicles are all Collett 'Sunshine' stock. I suppose the odds are diminishing that the rest of the train is the same, but neverthless it is fairly unusual in its uniformity

That's 'Excursion' stock. The GWR was not a great user of open carriages for general use, but they did produce trains of them for excursions, party travel and the like. These were effectively set train, hence the uniformity. These appear to be the 1937 built set, D123 brake and C74 saloons, but without the matching kitchen. According to Harris (GWR Coaches from 1890) these were all in service until 1963/4, but gone by late 1966.

According to Harris (GWR Coaches from 1890) the '38 Colletts were extinct in general service by the end of 1964, while the Hawkesworths went 1965- end '67, even though a couple were repainted into blue/grey.

This presumably excludes the Hawksworth sleepers and the full brakes ?

The sleepers lasted until 1970 and the full brakes seem to have lasted a good deal longer still.

I assume Bernard means day stock; as with the celebrated Gresley buffets, quoting dates for vans or small numbers of specialised designs just skews the picture, IMHO

So with the glut of cheap (er) Hornby Hawkesworths on the market thoughts turn towards using one to create one of the few blue/grey repaints.

Is the correct diagram represented in the current Hornby releases please?

And is there a good shot anywhere that could be used to base the lining on?

Thanks in advance

Phil
