Take the body off the mechanism, and look for a couple of screws underneath securing the bunker. Bachmann's body component layout is pretty standardised, the bunker ends usually screw attached to a metal core casting which forms the ballast. With the bunker end removed footplate access is open as on a tender loco. Just watch out for applied detail like handrails that may 'bridge' from the forward part of the cab to the bunker element that is being removed.
