Rugd1022
Went along to the Mini Cooper Register's annual bash down at Beaulieu on Sunday, first time I've been to this eye popping event and despite the horrendous weather there was a great turn out of 60s Minis...... as well as some beautiful 'standard' Mk1 and Mk2 Coopers etc there were some of the rarer 'Radford' and 'Wood & Pickett' specials and genuine BMC Works rally cars....thought I'd bung up some pics of the day . (The two tone car reg'd 'AA 1000' is the one driven by Gerald Harper in the TV series 'Adam Adamant' in 1966 / 67, and the gold coloured Mini Traveller Estate is one of six specially built for the 1967 Racing Car Show by John Cooper Garages). Clay Country
Lovely pics of some beautiful cars, thanks for sharing. Inspires me to get me own (rather less historic) Cooper finished and back on the road...
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted June 14, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 14, 2011 Great set of pictures - thanks for sharing those with us. My son's car is just your normal average 1978 998cc Hope you don't mind - I have posted a link to this topic on the Derbyshire Classic Mini Owners forum http://www.dcmoc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1607 Mike (or Steve's Dad as I'm known on there)

Ill have a mk1 cooper one day I keep telling myself light blue with white roof just like that D reg one above
Robert
Ahhh! Wonderful... I've always had a hankering for an original Cooper S. Still, I mustn't grumble too much because I've got an MPi Cooper. Tasty! Are they still making Minilites? Replicas, yes. See here... Minispares Great set of pictures - thanks for sharing those with us. My son's car is just your normal average 1978 998cc A hot 998 can be very hot, and all Mini's are tremendous fun!
Rugd1022
Thanks chaps glad you enjoyed the slightly moist snaps... here's a few more (The blue S at the bottom 'WMU 211G' is mine, bless it's little non spinning starter motor.... a little grease up job for the weekend methinks) EDIT : Pete, regarding those Minilite replicas Robert linked to - my car came with a set of these and they are very good (not to mention popular), they really do look the part, I only swapped them round for the Dunlop D1s to make the car look a little bit different from all the other cars. Tempted to put them back on though! Nidge

Sounds like you've got the same trouble as me - still, I'd rather have your starter motor than mine. For the moment, I'm carrying a crowbar around - but the starter motor hasn't played up since the solenoid was cleaned. Here's TJ Her bum is still sitting a bit high in this shot, because I'd just done the rear cones!
Penlan
I seem to remember there was a Mini that was cut down the middle and a 6" slice inserted, don't suppose that was there, was it? Penlan (Owner of proper Austin 7's, c. 1933)
oggy1953
My first 2 cars were mini's. utter rust buckets. The first had a split in the floot pan, when it rained the water would pour in. The second had its rear sub-frame rot, got that replaced then the gear box went. Think i'd better put this in the ' Gone but not missed thread '

oggy1953
Ah, So thats what it looks like, never fixed mine, just gave up and bought a Ford Anglia, the one with the sloping inward back window. Never any trouble with that then i part exed it for a Hillman Imp Wished i hadn't but thats another story...
Robert
Yes, that's what it looks like. Here's another shot once everything was back together! Shame about the Imp though - they did have one or two "reliability issues". Typically, the either seemed to be incredibly good, or incredibly bad with nothing in between! Apologies to Nidge for well and truly hijacking his thread!

Think i'd better put this in the ' Gone but not missed thread ' The sills were the real weak point - though I was always breaking the engine stabliiser. My sills went after 4 years. Still loved the car though - I would kill to have one now in the 'States (Union Flag on roof, please). Best, Pete.

Yep, the sills had gone on both of mine too, have to agree that i would like a 'Good' one now for fun, The current BMW version should not be called a mini, Far too posh, Far too expensive

You can't really tell from the pic but mine will need a bit of bodywork doing eventually, it was completely restored in May / June 1991 and has stood up pretty well, but the seams under the headlamps are going (as per normal ). Might lower mine another inch or so at the back as it has adjustables all round. Penlan - the spliced Mini you mention wasn't there.... there's a photo of it somewhere in one of the souvineer mags from the Mini 35 / 40 events I think. The usual places - the seams, A-panels, bottom of the doors. Thankfully the sills are reasonably good, and she hasn't been messed around too much in her life so no horrors like oversills. However, crustiest part is the scuttle Typical MPi I've got hi-los on the front, but not on the back - which is why she is sitting a bit high! I've subsequently changed the knuckle joints for the original shorter ones and now that the cones have settled down it is sitting much more level. I take it from what you've said, you've got dry suspension on your Cooper - that's a distinct advantage! Don't drop the suspension too low though - you'll scrape the arches going around corners
Rugd1022
Sounds like tin worm in all the usual places then.... the scuttle area can be a pain but if you get someone who knows what they're doing it can be done in small pieces rather than rip out the screen and do the whole thing. Mine will need the wings doing at some point but the original front panel with the factory mods for the oil cooler fitment is still in good nick. Yes, my car was converted from wet to dry suspension during it's restoration way back in 1991. It's only done just over 6000 miles since then, the chap who bought it from the restorers kept it for fifteen years and only did 2000 miles in all that time! He kept it serviced and MOT'd though, and some years there's only an eight mile difference between MOT certificates. I'm still sorting through the two boxes of spares and accessories that came with it, there are some unopened 'Speedwell' bits which I might put on the car eventually. Robert
Unfortunately, I think the scuttle is beyond repair! It is so crusty that I can see it needing a complete repair panel. She's just got TÃœV (MOT) for two years and so I'll look into restoring the bodywork once those two years are up. My gut feeling is that the shell isn't too bad, but if I find out that it is a basket case once I've got her stripped down, then I'll consider a reshell (and start saving those pennies!) Mine has just had a complete Engine and gearbox rebuild at 145,000Km (so around 90,000 miles) - the previous owner was unfortunately too lax with oil changes, but by and large it is a reasonably solid car. Well Robert, at least late Mini shells aren't hard to come by. How many owners has yours had...? I dropped very lucky with this one as it's only had eight owners in forty three years, including me! Another Mk1 Cooper 1275 S from Sunday...
Robert
I'm the third owner, and she was first registered in 1998. So, extrapolating out to 43 years, we are about even! That mark one S is truly beautiful!
