........does anyone remember when this was announced? it was the same time as the 350 desiro, 3f and quite a few others, this is the last of those to arrive.

To ask that it must've been a long time ago........

I remember adding to the 2012 wishlist poll on here - "Anything from Bachmann that arrived in the same year it was announced"

Just recieved my AL5, running it in now. Very smooth. Lights are a bit bright but will sort that out later. Well done Bachmann it was worth the wait. Next.................. :scratchhead:

John.

After thought.. How comes Bachmann got it so right with their AL5 but Heljan got it wrong with the class 86?

I would say that part of this was because Heljan got it wrong, Bachmann were very aware of keeping their eye on the ball with this. But Heljan do appear to slip up to varying degrees on locos almost as a matter of course - probably bad luck with references coupled with engineering necessities.

Hi Ian

Is the control arm for the pantograph head(s) still tilting it the wrong way or has this been rectified?

Cheers

Hi Ian

EDIT: I rescind my comment. Having now got the model home and had time for more than just a quick rush look at work, both pans do sit level! My calipers make the control arm on the 31-676 release about 27.5mm. Anyone got a figure for 31-678 as thats the one I broke.

No they haven't Jim (my early electric blue one arrived at work this morning, destined to become an 81 ;) ). From my playing, looks like the top control arm is too long. Shortening it will pull the pan head back to a more vertical position, with the added Benifitt of making the pan easier to lock into the down position. Down side is I've busted a control arm finding this out. Will dig out some 0.4 NS wire and my bill bedford handrail jig when I get home, see if I can get us an exact figure.

Matt

Its not because its too long its because it goes to the top sid of the head pivot. To sort it out it needs to be fixed below the pivot point.

Shortening the wire pulls the head back. The arm would be the correct length to push the head back if the mounting was below the pivot point.

IMO the shortening method works with what Bachmann have provided us. Any other method deviates to far from the prototype for my liking/ means extra work.

In any case, I'll opt for 'looks right' over 'is right'.

ive just taken the springs off mine, bit of a nuisance trying to keep them to stay down and for asthetic reasons.

I like the feature of tiny switches under the box on the roof which is removable, to enable switching off of the interior and head/tale lights.

also included are nice etched crest and numbers, although the numbers are etched together with blue paint between them.

if i was being really picky, the white around the windows is more grey and doesnt match the roof in real light, but not off putting.

really happy with mine.

Finally I could do with some pointers on one little detail that I have been looking at modelling. I have been looking at some photos of 85s with a view to adding some detail using angle or brass rod to the front of the leading bogies. Here is a close up of 85026 the actual TOPS version from Bachmann. To my eye it appears to have a cross bracing between the upright T shaped angle iron rail guards yet i cant see this clearly in most other photos. Maybe the photo is deceptive as it could equally be the cross brace rodding for the sanding gear pipes (another detail I want to add when I get the damn time not to mention the lamp brackets!).

85Bracing.jpg

Maybe if you have a link to a really clear full frontal shot showing this detail this could provide a cut and dried answer and it would no doubt serve to help others who might want to go down the same route with their detailing work.

It would be good to see a clear photo of the additional jumper socket on the secondman side under the buffer beam too as most photos show the other side.

Also managed to have a bash at addressing the over bright corridor lights and this has turned out OK given I was working with the factory LEDs - those fitted to Hornby models for the cab lights give off a very realistic light indeed but for now I am happy with this result as it doesnt silly running on the layout with them on either anymore.still no wires for those offended at the very thought of a lack of them :) Just think of it as a WIP.

It is indeed. Looks like a check your prototype for the sand pipes though, some of the pics have both, some just one and some none at all.

the more I look at my electric blue version, the more I want to repaint it, in my opinion the blue in normal light is too dark and the white around the windows is grey.

From what I've seen (from photos on here and the pre-production model), the blue is tricky to judge, if it's overexposed it looks slightly washed out and too much of a pastel blue colour. The real colour wasn't very durable, just like the slide film of the day- you could compare a dozen images and they'd all be different. The grey however looks too dark and needs correcting.

I actually have an AL5 on the desk next to me, but it's not coming out of the box as I cancelled the pre-order three weeks ago but the box shifter still despatched it...

Here is another shot from the front......to achieve the fairly low level light effect on the headcode markers was a simple case of adjusting the requisite CV from 7 to 0. as all the lights seem to be on the same dimmer CV it helped tone down those corridor lights too but with an extra helping hand of some varnish and paint :)

Ive also written to Bachmann with some feedback about the lighting functions and this has been passed onto the relevant people/dept and will hopefully result in improvements/tweaks to future models/retools.

Michael going by the book British Rail Fleet Survey I quote a pictur on page 61 " Class AL5 no E3067, in it's original 'electric blue' livery with white cab roof, pale fawn grey cab window surrounds" So I think the colour is right. I am not sure about the Blue, but as I never see one of these in the flesh so to speak I can't say if it is right or wrong. Still a great model.
