ToBodlyGo has had a couple of Flowers on his thread and I think there have been other ones shown so here's mine.  On it's  second trial run.    On its sea trials before being finally fitted out.  That's my story.

Actually went well on the water at a reasonable scale-looking speed.

My idea was to have the model as a museum ship (there is a Flower preserved in Halifax Nova Scotia) and having a place for it alongside a length of dock on the layout, and then taking it out to operate from time to time. The dock is yet to be built...

Next, add more fittings as I have the time to do it!

Chieftain Mk5 - 1:48 ASAM Models kit

I really wish there was a 1:72/76 model of these, I'd love a short train of Chieftains on Warflats.  Actually scratch that, they're too wide, but Scorpions would do.  Something to replicate the Army specials to Pembroke Dock en route to Castlemartin ranges.

P1030380.JPG.1a72e38fc41a1f86730def1b3feecabf.JPGHello George.

This is  the kit, Revell HMCS Snowberry.  It's from the moulds of the old Matchbox plastic kit from the 1980s. That made either HMS Bluebell, HMCS Snowberry or US Saucy. The Revell kit has instructions for just Snowberry or Saucy but the parts for Blubell are still on the sprues.

It's 1:72 scale which makes the hull 33" or so.  About as long as SS Talacre but a smaller scale.  Intended for a display model  there is a lot of room inside the hull so it converts to a working model easily.

The hull itself is in 4 parts, but can be made totally waterproof.  It doesn't need a lot of power, my one has a 385 motor with a 7.2 v battery pack, needed a bit of extra ballast.  Runs at a reasonable scale speed with a bit in reserve in case of problems.  Quite maneuverable but sails well  in a "ship" like way.

The kit has nearly 1000 parts (including crew, flags and rigging thread) and you get everything in one box, one advantage.

Revell reissued the kit several years ago as a "platinum" version with wood deck and etched parts which was more expensive. There is also a recent 1:144  kit, maybe that could be motorised but it's about 17" long.

cheers

Bill

Hi George,

The steam/smoke unit works very effectively in your pictures.  Does it take much current, ie will it run off the main motor battery, or does it need a separate supply?  Seen units like this advertised but never seen one actually operating.

Thanks, Bill

Exiled from my normal railway shed for 2 days per week for the foreseeable future.

So I've started on a Revell 1/72 V22 Osprey. First aero kit in may years.

If Covid drags on - I may get this built..........

And if desperate, there's always my 1/48 TSR2.

Cheers,

Mick

One thing I enjoy about kits is that you sometimes learn something you didn't know before. Today I learned about vertical fin offset! The Airifx P51 correctly has the fin at a small angle to the airflow. It's much less obvious in the Taymiya and Hasegawa P51s I built before.

Airfix 1/48th P51 awaiting paint.

This is an excellent kit, in my opinion, and great value at around 20 pounds.

p51.jpg.72bb438cad289ed5476f67b1b852b878.jpg

There are similar design elements between the Tamiya and Hasegawa kits but this feels like it's been engineered from scratch, with a clean slate. The whole approach to the wings, undercarriage wells, tail and cockpit and interior is very different, and works well. There's no guessing the angle of the undercarriage doors or wheels, it just takes care of that for you.

Although it's hard to photograph, the interior is among the best I've seen in 1/48th, with great detail and some nice instrument and instruction decals. The seat is good as well, with a separately moulded seat-belt.

I don't believe it's worth over-detailing cockpits unless they're going to be easily visible once the model is finished. This is good enough in my view, and will be even less visible once the rear canopy is in place.

p51a.jpg.e448589983618181abcd297c6986148e.jpg

As can be seen I used a little Mr Surfarcer here and there but with a bit more care even that wouldn't be necessary, so good is the fit.
