A very tasty Western Region Namer at Haymarket ....... strange white circles. Then 2 more standard fare - although at the time the Large Logo 47 - may have been one of the earliest repaints and caught my eye.

I've not to got to the bottom if the WR's fixation with painted "discs" on their diesels. I believe that 25063 was similarly treated, I think when it was working the Cardiff-Crewe services. I guessed that it was a Cardiff Canton embellishment, and am only guessing this class 47 was also a Cardiff loco.

40 158 is refuelled at Inverness

 

 

46 039 draws out a rake of carflats from Leith docks.

 

 

06 003 battles through the undergrowth on the Auchmuty branch with a mixed freight for the TR mill.

 

 

SC51035 at the end of a 3 car rake inside Ayr depot.

Sorry mods - looks like I've killed off this thread single handed!! One last attempt to breathe live into good old 1980's Scotrail.

 

A shameless plug for my local station in the days when it could boast junction status, a rare breed of shunter and an LNER pacific in the goods shed. The moral of the story is record it while you can - it may seem timeless but it'll be gone before you know it.

 

May 1980 and still with semaphores, 20221 arrives with the morning trip from Thornton Yard. Coal and china clay for the two paper mills on the branch. 06 003 waits to shunts the stock.

 

 

18 months later in January 1982 the 06 has gone and after some structural work on the branch 08 227 is seen with return empties from the TR mill. By this time the DRG mill seen in the background was no longer rail served. All is now a cycle path and new housing.

 

 

On the main line 27's have taken over the Edinburgh to Dundee services - except when they breakdown. In the background is a failed 27 021. In the foreground is the replacement 20 220 and some cheesed off passengers.

 

 

D49 Morayshire crosses the viaduct

 

 

Semaphores no more, 47 109 passes with southbound grain.

I will dig out some more of mine - but they don't compare to others on here. My scanned old prints look grainy and dark - but I will have another go too.

Last days of the 27's

 

In early 1987 Vic Berrys cut up several type 2's in the yard at Thornton. Death row you might say...

 

 

The beginning of the end for 27020. The black specks are not flaws in the image but the local crow (or is it vulture) population...

 

 

While all this was going on several of the locos continued in traffic. Here 27 025 sits outside the shed at Thornton.

 

 

From left to right : the doomed locos; various DMU's being stabled between local duties; class 20's for the local coal traffic and on the RHS the branch line to Westfield - still semaphore controlled.

 

At Grangemouth depot 27 050 is stabled with a 47.

 

 

Back at Thornton 27 059 sits outside the shed - from this angle the set back of the suspension springs is clearly seen - a very worthwhile mod to the Heljan model IMHO

 

 

With the SRPS 'Class 27 Farewell' excursion, 27 055 and 27 063 head away from Wormit

 

 

(Sorry, but I just can't leave without a snap of 27 020 in happier days)

I'll get the scan organised. Wee bit confused about the other request as there was no molasses traffic at or through Markinch (AFAIK) - coal, kaolin, whisky and scrap metal for the branch/yard in the 80's + the passing stuff. Let me know and I'll see what I've got.

I have 2 seperate sightings of what seem to be Mollasses tanks possibly at Markinch - both 1987 in Sept and Oct.

 

Agreed - not usual but possible could be - I dont have photos as these are taken from a sightlings list.

 

From the description could be TTA and were (from rest of wagon make up) in a trainload including polybulk wagons and CL26 in RF livery.

 

As far as I can find out - these would be allocated to the mollasses traffic usually to/from Menstrie.

 

I've queried the location with the listee as I don't agree with Markinch.

 

Other bits of the listing on the dates take in locations across Fife, including Cameron Bridge and Burntisland then across to Stirling but includes Thornton Yard! So I think it is a possible mismatch for location to sighting list.

 

But - if you don't ask.....

 

If it is at Markinch - do you think there's some confusion between the Kaolin tanks and mollasses tanks?

i used to live in one of the houses in that picture , just not in the 80's when there was sights like that to see, boring 90's nothing but sprinters and hst's and the aircraft fuel tank train every week thanks for posting that

I'd suggest that the 'molasses' tank might have been one of the china clay slurry tanks modified from the same batch of former caustic-soda tanks, which retained the original numbers. I didn't think bogie vehicles were cleared for the Markinch branch.

I'm curious to know what the Transfesa van is doing there....

Your thinking followed my own....

 

I've spoken to the person who recorded this and have shown him some photos of the China Clay tanks. From that I think we can be certain that what he saw would be those wagons and not Mollasses.

 

I've shown him photos of the same batch of wagons as Mollasses and he is adamant that the wagons he saw were blue and filthy. To me that sounds like a perfect description of the China Clay Tanks!

The bogie vehicles were allowed on the Auchmuty branch in the latter years. Must have been a tight squeeze under the A92 but there are a couple of pics on the net and scenes in the Railfreight DVD series of the vehicles on the line - example

 

The two leading vehicles in the scene are the TR PAA hoppers which were blue and sometimes filthy but I'd be surprised if they were confused with a molasses tank.

 

Below is the last image of a branch working that I managed to get - I'd be interested in knowing more about the latter and last known workings.

24 006 (The Eastfield re railing pet) has it's last taste of sunshine Glasgow Works April 1980

 

 

 

A crispy 27. This time 27 202 Nothing strange about that in the 80's and this is where they wound up - dumped at the back of Glasgow St Rollox works in April 1980

 

 

Sunday afternoons inside Eastfield shed. 47 053 loses it's dignity in 1981 for bogie work while 37 125 and 081 try not to blush.

 

 

 

 

 

27 032 waits to depart Bishopbriggs - probably for Dundee in May 1981. This would have been my train home from Glasgow that day to my home town of Bishopbriggs - First stop out of Queen Street

I used to love the original E&G class 27 push pull sets. Whenever I travelled to Edinburgh I always preferred to get a nice quiet door window - either the first or last passenger window for maximum Sulzer thrash through Cowlairs tunnel.

 

I would always cross to the right hand side of the train as they passed Eastfield depot. For years 24 006 was a more or less permanent fixture there, part of the scenery beside the mainlines until it was replaced by a 27.

 

Quite brought a lump to my throat to see your photo of it waiting to be cut.

24006 (also April 1980 - the 26th) but still at Eastfield shed doing a fair impersonation of a bulled up GD loco (only kidding - Ok I'm not...)

 

 

A more typical ED resident with the towering des-res behind

 

 

Walking to the depot in those times was an event in itself....

 

In June 1981 St Rollox held a well attended Open day - some memories

Loving this thread, along with the Sheffield end of the Woodhead route, Scottish railways are an equal love (the highlands especially)

 

Does anyone know of a book or somewhere on the web where i can get track plans (and decent detailed photos) of Scottish stations in the Highlands? in particular i'm after plans of Ardlui in the 80's but i'm quite happy for anything earlier, even from steam days and any other stations like Crainlarich etc... are welcome to be honest

 

I have some photos of my own of Ardlui in the mid 80's but they aren't really as detailed as i want.

Firstly, great pics.

 

The Quail Map Coy 'British Rail Track Diagrams' #1 Scotrail of 1987 shows Ardlui having a simple passing loop with island platform and a simple fan of 3 CCE sidings on the eastern side.

Taking the token, (the stock in the sidings looks like the Ft Bill alumina hoppers but why stabled at Ardlui?)
