Waverley in the 80's. An avi file straight from APP via AOL. Quality seems better - but it only goes to emphasise my squint setups.

Absolutely fantastic video. Waverley in 86. Unbelievable. :D Exactly the sort of stuff I'm looking for. Details galore, stock info. What more can I say (except to be incredibly greedy and say, more please!).

 

I did wonder how long this thread could keep going but the stuff being unearthed now is as good as it ever was, if not better.

What can I say but awsome,B) it took me back to 1985 when on my first visit to Waverley I stood on that same platform and watched the push pulls and a 27 shunting stock for a Dundee train, I think I watched the video of the 27 depart about four times, fantastic stuff and the sound, superb.

It looks like the Push pull trains used the same platform most of the time as did the Dundee services, it looks like the Dundee trains changed loco's each time rather than run round.

 

I think we might see some of these trains on Daves Waverley West soon. I think the ballast train may have been quite regular as I remember seeing a 26 on an outward working then seeing it later in the day returning over the Forth Bridge.

Spent the thick part of two hours going through this lot today, and only one steam pic!

 

Seriously though, I was not keen on the blue diesel era, but when you see what variety was around (and is all now gone - or almost all gone anyway) it makes you think. And this thread has actually made me do just that. Nice stuff.

Thats a good pic of the 26 on the ballast Peter.

 

FYI the platforms at Waverley (west end) were fairly settled in terms of services. Using the platform numbers as per here(although the west end was largely unaffected by the 2006 renumbering)the general arrangement was (early-mid 80's):

 

Plats 10&11 - Carstairs portions/through GQS HST and Aberd HST

Plats 12&13 - Dunblane/Glas Cent/GQS slow services

Plat 14 - GQS fasts

Plats 15/16 - Dunblane/Inversnecky/Aberdeen

Plat 17 - Dundee - the mid road was used to stable the down loco

Plat 18 - Fife local (Dunfermline/Cowdenbeath)

Plat 19 - Aberdeen inter regional/HST

 

Seeing as this is Scotland and not Switzerland, this arrangement was subject to change! I dare say that i've missed some out (did Bathgate use the excursions???)

 

The 47/7 on the vid leaving with the mk1's and mk2's was on a Dundee service - it was fairly unusual for HA to use its 47/7's on these duties but by no means unknown.

i just realised that although 10/11 and 19/1 were single platforms, the trains would be 11 or 19 northbound, 10 or 1 southbound?

 

also remembering 14 for mk3 comfort in 47 mins or 12/13 for edin-glas central 'via shotts' in a rickety 101/107 for god-knows-how-long!

 

i suppose, depending on the frequency the plat.17 mid road was used on a last-one-in/next-one-out basis? would save a station pilot working anyway

 

and of course plats. 20/21 away over there, behind the wall, accessible only by loads of steps up/long walk/loads of steps down, particularly the 'holiday' trains of mk1 corridor stock to scarborough etc. bad enough normally, but particularily with a family and all your luggage in tow!

Not sure I like this thread very much, just when I thought I had my layout location sorted you lot post these photos to remind me of my trips to Scotland courtesy of my free passes, that was in pre wife and kids days. I'll have to dig some of my pics out. Just a quick query about Dundee, There is no release crossovers at the end of the bay platforms so when the loco hauls arrived from Edinburgh was there another loco waiting to attach on tthe tail end or was the loco bringing the train in shunt released?

Hi Ian,

The trains from Edinburgh were shunt released, I posted a pic somewhere before showing a class 26 about to remove the stock to release a class 27 that had bought the train in. I am not sure if it was always a class 26. It 's possable some trains arrived at another platform and then run round and shunted into the bay.

The track arrangement at Dundee at the time was far more complicated than it is now and the regular process was for the train to arrive, usually into platform 3, class 08 to collect the stock and proceed out. The train engine would follow the stock out to the starter signal at the end of the platform. The stock would then be set back into platform 2 and the loco would then head out from the end of the platform before backing down onto its stock. At some times both platforms would be occupied and the train engine would pull completely away from the platform ends. If memory serves me right they were able to go out either side of the signal box, going beyond the incoming signals in order to be signalled back in. (if that makes sense)

Just while I am on a roll, a few more 1980's scottish scans this time DMU's

 

Metro Cams around Edinburgh

 

 

My favorite DMU's were always the Swindon Cross country having worked with them on the Central Wales line early in my BR career, imagine my surprise to find this one in Edinburgh in 1988

 

 

A couple of 107's one at Edinburgh and One at Glasgow QS

 

 

Finally, my sister lived in Kirkcaldy in 1989/90 where this pic of a 150 was taken.

 

 

Thats all for now, if anyone is interested I'll dig out a few more scottish shots next week.

Re Dundee Tay Bridge

 

As ever Railscot turns up some gems!

 

Pic of box diagram in my gallery here. Note that the carriage sidings behind the box have been disconnected according to the diagram.

 

Prior to the Edinburgh services moving to loco hauled the Dundee-GQS services were loco hauled with similar consists to those used on the Edinburgh stoppers.

 

Here 27017 arrives

 

 

and the stock is shunted by 08 736

 

 

The 08 seems to have disappeared around 1984/5 and been replaced by the up loco when the Edinburgh services changed from dmu's.

 

Back to Waverley, the 08's that I have picced there (a couple are in my gallery) include 08430/515/711/7/8/20. (All 1980-1) No doubt plenty more.

Plenty 47's as was the norm around 85-86 but managed to include a couple of 37's and the sad day when 27's 001 and 046 ran the SRPS Farewell trip.

Don't panic not 27 photos.

 

Tidy looking 27 206 sneaking through Motherwell station 13.10.1981 (29 years ago!)

I haven't seen many 27's under the wires guess you had to seek them out on turns

between Motherwell, Carstairs and Carlisle.
