MrWhippyO
If you water down PVA glue and mix in some black watercolour paint and use it where you want oil stains the black will look like it's coated the ballast James
Jack00
That's a well good tip! Thanks. I'll need lots of oil stains on carriage sidings from the 57's! Are you going to stain where your tractors have sat? Jack.
MrWhippyO
Definitely, class 37's will always be leaky! As I don't own an airbrush, this seems like the next best option James
Jack00
Yeah anything built in England will leak, even fords and vauxhalls lol! I think even newer models of loco's leak, like HST's and refurbed DMU's. Jack.
MrWhippyO
Just about finished ripping up the old ballast, thank god! Just need to re-glue the track and wait for my new ballast! James
MrWhippyO
Here you go Jack, the newly made signs, ready for going up soon
MrWhippyO
At last my new ballast has arrived, so I have spent this morning laying it, the point motors are really uphappy now, so they will need adjusted to work properly, here's a few photos. James
Jack00
Those signs looking great! The ballest is really good too, you happy with the result of the new ballest? Need to sort mine out too, ballest can be a tricky choice! Jack.
MrWhippyO
I prefer this stuff over the old ballast, much more like falkland yard, finished off the ballast tonight and added some bits of shrubs. Thankfully I'm out most of tomorrow so the glue everywhere gets a chance to set hard, it's very difficult to leave it alone! What sort of ballast are you thinking about using? James
Jack00
Hi James glad your satisfied with it! Its so hard to leave glue dry, without poking haha! Most of the track will be surrounded by 'concrete' for walkways on carraige sidings, but was thinking sand around the fuel point and shed as a trial. Jack. MrWhippyO
That's the ballast fully set! So I've got out some of the locos and apart from the odd stone that causes a bump, all seems to be running smoothly again, so I'm pleased! Jack00
Bet your chuffed! Any more pics? Would love to see more. Jack.

Jack00
Hi James. Those pictures are amazing, you've really made alot of progress! Graffiti looks ace! DRS 37 looks really at home along with the grids and Gronks! Superb. Jack.
MrWhippyO
Thanks Jack, I'm really pleased with it's progress, hopefully I'll be continuing with the OHLE over the next while, so expect more photo's as that progresses. Cheers, James
Jack00
You've actually got me bitten by the electro bug! I've ordered some over heads for my prototype layout. Shalmstry is looking really great mate! You should be proud. Jack.
MrWhippyO
Thanks once again, I really hope Bachmann or someone bring out the Class 380, although it would be too long for Shalmstry it would be good model to have. Shalmstry being my second model railway, I'm really pleased with how it's turned out, been a huge learning curve, still a long way off being finished, but everything brings it closer to looking the part. MrWhippyO
Here's the latest set of photos, last 3 are of OHLE lines I've used for building my own. And from model rail scotland I got two yard lights and a Hornby Class 87, 87004 James
Jack00
hi james, just checking in on your updates, looking great love the 87. Jack
MrWhippyO
Hi Jack, thanks for the feedback. At an exhibition like Model Rail Scotland my wallet is almost sure to take quite a battering! I've taken one of my ancient Hornby coaches to convert it into the Network Rail Mentor, it won't be exactly as prototype but it will be close enough to go with mt DRS 37! Jack00
I've not been to an expo for ages. Littelly years and years I must go soon and find some bargains, my wallet will probs be as sore! The network rail barrier/generel utility van is a great idea. It's a shame the RHTT wagons are hard to come across they would look ace top n tailed with DRS 37's or 20s/57's. The MPV's are quite pricy..... Keep us updated. Jack.
MrWhippyO
MPV's are quite pricey, and also wouldn't fit on Shalmstry. My Mentor coach is coming on, I got it painted today, doesn't look exactly like it's rolled off a Bachmann production line but it does for me. Going to change the pan on my 87 and use the old one from it on the Mentor, and it still has the logos and other stuff to get added. You quite often saw Network Rail coaches in Falkland so this sitting in a siding would fit in nicely! James
MrWhippyO
My MENTOR is needing yet another coat of paint after me deciding I wasn't happy with the window profile. Some were covered and others filed bigger. It still needs sanded smooth so you can't see any of the joins in it. I also completed another testing coach over the weekend, I have seen it in Falkland before with a pair of DRS 37's and another 3 testing coaches so it would suit Shalmstry. I had a fairly major incident with my drill today. I was drilling down into the board to make a hole for one of the terminus masts and the chuck caught one bit of the OHLE that was up, breaking 4 of my masts into bits..... Having scrapped them and made 4 new ones, they are now up and I will make sure the drill is a LONG way away from them in the future!!! Here are some photos of how the layout stands just now. The first 3 are showing my progess with my MENTOR, it was already sort of in Network Rail colours, it was a failed NR coach at one point. This is my other coach, which I believe is usually part of the Structure Gauging Train? (Corrections welcome!) And finally, my current progress on the OHLE, I don't think it looks too bad, and the 87's pan doesn't catch on any of it, so I'm pleased! Thanks for looking, James
Ydna
The Mentor Coach and the other both look very nice. Did you scratch-build the body, and if so where did you get the bogies and chassis?
MrWhippyO
Hi AlmereRoad, my Mentor was built from an old Hornby coach that came with a "City of Bradford" set that I got many many moons ago. I clamped it in the vice and sawed the appropriate pieces of the roof off. I then filed some windows larger and boarded up other to get a more accurate window profile. The new pieces of roof are made from 2mm plasticard. The bogies and chassis were all part of the old coach it was made from. Thanks for looking James
