MrWhippyO
Hi there, I though after seeing the other layouts on this site I would start a thread for my new layout "Shalmstry Cuttings TMD". The layout is based very roughly on my local "Falkland Yard" in Ayr and the now closed "Eastfield TMD" which was in Glasgow. The layout will be mainly for my BR Diesel Loco's (Class 37's, 08's and 56's but I may add some newer Class 66's to the layout as it progresses. Arpleymodeller
A decent amount of track in a small space,as I also have a TMD layout I will be following this with interest. Regards Lewis

I'm really not that sure about having a fiddle yard, I think I might in the future but that would be a project for later on.
MrWhippyO
Hi again, That's me got my baseboard cut (1600mm x 400mm) and there is a narrower spare bit so I'm going to use that as my background (pictures to come soon). I want to have a retaining wall, or something along those lines along the back, above which I will have some warehouse gables and other building ends, so are there any good ways of making a wall like that, something that looks a bit like this: http://www.freewebs.com/norwoodpark/norwood66010a.JPG So I have my track laid out and I have used drawing pins to hold it all down while I test loco's on it to see if my design actually works. I'll get round to getting some photos up soon.
Crisis Rail
The retaining wall you mentioned is available from International Models - polystyrene based a bit of dry brushing and weathering can make them look reasonably good. - Ian
MrWhippyO
This is the track pinned down to see if my layout works, then it will get glued into position.
MrWhippyO
Cheers Ian, that wall is perfect for the layout! This weekend I got myself some foam board to start to create my raised platform area. I also have been soldering the motors to the switches, I have designed the controller and the point switches to be detached from the layout to make it easier to transport. I used a 20 pin "Scart" Connector, and after screwing up one attempt, I managed to get it working, it kept shorting on my extremely dodgy soldering. I was at the Ayr Model railway exhibition this weekend and got myself a second hand Lima Class 47 in Sector Petroleum livery, it just needs a chip and some lighting, and very probably a clean out. MrWhippyO
Progress has been slow unfortunatly, but here are the photo's showing the layout as it stands just now. I have just added some of the grass and some other details.
MrWhippyO
Well, over the holidays I have gained a new Class 37 (37682) in DRS compass livery so that has now been chipped and is working on the layout... som more ballast, bushes and other details have been added, as you will see from the photos to follow James. Jack00
Hi. Like this alot, looking great. Out of interest how did you make the EWS/RFD maintenance depot sign? I printed mine off the computer but wasnt sure if there is a better way. Jack.
MrWhippyO
Hi Jack, Thanks for the comment The railfreight sign I just made myself but the EWS depot sign came from a website where a PDF of lots of different signs were available. SInce the last photo was taken I decided I was unhappy with the area of scenery in the middle so it was ripped up and changed (photos to come) Cheers, James

37403
very nice looking layout coming on here. I note that its based somewhat on falkland yard.It really is sad that the depot and the yard are now officially closed. Remember that you can run class 60s on your area as well. They were common as muck in these parts on coal trains from the likes of knockshinnoch and hunterston! keep up the good work 37403
MrWhippyO
I remember the days when Falkland yard used to be packed with EWS 66's and HTA wagons, what are they going to be doing with the yard now? The bit just over the bridge at the north end was great for taking photos! I will possibly get some 60's and 66's to add to the layout when the fiddle yard is added. rob D2
Just one point, your sign says "railfreight distribution" but the logo is railfreight coal, a different sector.

James Are you aware that the long lyes is open in kilmarnock? The grand plan was to shut falkland and ayr depot and use the new run dound in kilmarnock however they have only installed one loop so when its busy coal trains still have to run to falkland and go back via annbank etc. If you see the next issue of rail express magazine, due out tomorrow, you will see a feature on coal traffic in ayrshire so there will be plenty of inspiration for you.Im told its 7 pages long! cheers 37403
MrWhippyO
Ah right, thank you for that, it would be good to know what's actually happening, it's ages since I've got any proper picture of anything other than 156's and 380's round here. MrWhippyO
Just a few quick photo's of the newly installed homemade fueling point, it still has things to be added but the bulk of it is there. 37254 calls for the long awaited fuel! I just need to get the roof looking less cardboard like! 37682 shows of it's newly installed detail pipes, the standard ones it came with were so fiddly and impossible to fit. It looked too bare with just the snow plough so I made my own. 37682 and 37254 stop at the fuel point. That's all for now, hope to get the palisade fence installed at the front in the not so distant future! James
MrWhippyO
I have decided that the problem with my layout is the ballast, it's the wrong colour and nowhere near oily enough. Is there a way of changing the colour of the ballast, like watercolour paint mixed through and painted on? Or does it all have to be lifted and re-done? James
18B
Hi, a great layout, RE: the ballast colour, I wouldn;t contemplate taking it up, you could either use an aerosol to spray it, or try a wash of the water colour you mentioned, worst case try it on the end of a siding and leave it until another day, see how it turns out, it can't do much harm, as long as you use a minimal amount.
