Really low flying

I used to work in a place that was well known for military low flying although seeing a Phantom almost down to the level of our yard lighting towers was probably the ultimate. However the best was one day when I was on a visit to the Bridport branch and driving along a country lane in the vicinity, I think, of Toller when I heard a Hercules so I stopped and looked up as I thought it would be as low as it sounded - it was in fact even lower and I finally saw it climbing out of the valley where it had been below the lane I was on. In reality of course nowhere near to the ground as some of the aircraft, mentioned above but contour flying at a lower altitude than the flanks of the valley it was transitting. At least it made a change from them following the railway up towards our office before they descended to well under 100feet for practice low level drop at a nearby airfield (Keevil).

That trick can still be seen occasionally though it is far less frequent that it once was. I used to live within 1/2 mile of the runways at Keevil.

That gives a pretty good idea of what Vulcan's are all about in the sound department! Was it a deliberate move or an aborted landing?

judging by the angle of approach I'd say it was a missed approach wave-off - but then who cares - what a fabulous explosion of noise and just what this aircraft is all about................all it needed was a pair of escorting Lightnings

Whilst this is a very interesting thread I have just edited some posts to take out the quotes and videos from previous posters. Please if you are replying do not copy a video over from another post as it only duplicates it and adds to download problems for members and the server.

Just been watching contemporary film of the Mosquitos flying in formation at 30ft during the Jericho raid of 1944 on BBC2 - amazing skill to do that under such conditions.

My father only ever had two flights in powered aircraft. The first was a Mosquito. This was on some post WW2 Army /RAF get together. On one day the RAF crew were given rides in tanks and on the second day there were trips in aircraft. Dad said he was convinced that he was further from the ground in his tank.
