Has anyone here any personal experience of the sound chip from this company? From a look at their website the difference between this and a standard sound decoder seems to be the smaller range of sounds and the requirement for a standard dcc decoder for control. But on the plus side its only £44.

Thoughts?

No personal experience, just a reflection.

It may only be £44, but the sound isn't really smashing, judging by the links on their site.....

And as it is a sound only decoder, you must calculate the total cost anyway... a good DCC decoder is roughly £25, so then we're almost reaching the "real" sound decoders in price.

The size isn't all that small either, wich means that in order to fit it together with a drive-decoder, it may not be suited for the smaller steamers....

Some years back, the US manufacturer Broadway Limited, generally credited with introducing the first mass-market HO sound-equipped locos, decided to split with their sound supplier QSI, and devise a cheaper system in-house. This they did under their Blueline range, which provided sound without DCC. There was scope to add your choice of control decoder. But the complexities of having two decoders in one loco made programming much more of a chore, and the idea was not liked by many.

MRC and Digitrax, maybe others, offer budget generic sound decoders in the US market, and Digitrax offer a few UK sound-files for their cheaper offerings. Sound is among the most personal of tastes in modelling. If you like what you hear, then buy it, and for many that will be enough, but iffy sound and troublesome programming together feel like a good way to be disappointed. M Graff's point about total price is very relevant, too, if the package is less than brilliant.
