My layout Fellburn was in the Mag in 2004 and I was talking to Tony Wright in, I think, 2008 and he asked when it was at their show (Doncaster) , I said it hadn't so he told me 'it's booked, someone will be in touch' I took it in 2010. It was also invited to Peterborough but I turned it down as it was starting to show it's age.

Anyway, hope to be visiting tomorrow.

Seemed to be more muddled this year in the now traditional Warners fashion of hiding layouts amongst trade stands apart fom those in the foyer/first hall (which last year was sensibly full of the specialist stands) / first floor. Maybe because it wasn't crambed in by trade stands I quite liked Stratton St George (although I tend to favour layouts not seen before which ruled out a number). Took the train to Donny this year and many thanks to Northern for laying on ex Centro 150/1 with no working heaters - had just managed to thaw out on IC225 went the entire carriage was evacuated down the train due to no working doors. At least on the return my -1 connection turned into a +2 :D

Sorry but I have to say that the Doncaster show this year was more akin to a BIG SHOP rather than an exhibition. Plenty of box shifters all plying their goods at variable prices and several specialist stands. However one trader posted a notice stating " Metcalfe kits 20% off Marked Price" but upon choosing two kits he revised this to 'the discount has already been deducted' I challenged him on the misrepresentation and suggested he removed the sign (which he did) I was not amused and will no longer purchase anything from them again.

I will check the listings next year before travelling 100 miles.

Cheers

Went this morning with the good lady, It was good to see my mates from the club I used to belong to on their Wingfield Junction layout which was running very well and appeared to entertain a good crowd on the front for the time I was there. What surprised me was the amount of pushing and re-railing of loco's particularly on the finer scale layouts, it might have been that they were cold as we got in at bang on 9.30am.

My missus was intrigued Bratton Fleming snow scene and the story behind it and as it was close to Wingfield Jnc., I had time to talk to my mates!

Other Layouts that caught my attention were Rhyd-y-Clafdy and Haslington TMD, the latter showed DCC at its best in my opinion, for what its worth.

Trade was very good and judging by the number of folk walking about with carrier bags by 12 o'clock thats what people go for! I for one got the nuclear flask I wanted at a good price from one of the box shifters!

All for £12.00 entry for both of us, not much more than a little local show. Glad I subscibe to BRM.

Cheers

Excellent day at Donny today. Saw and chatted with a load of old friends, saw a lot of familiar layouts, and spent a lot of time, but not a lot of money with the traders. Enjoyable talk on scenic stuff gave a nice break in the afternoon too. Even the real railways did me proud, getting me home with a seat (just) all the way. Quite a few pictures taken - some here- a good number more mainly of lower quality on my Flickr site

One for South Yorkshire trading standards I would think but then its a weekend...

Had a couple of odd transactions myself, one apologising for not having the correct change (okay it was only 10p and no one else had the item but ???) and another whereby on checking the price on their web page once home noticed it was £1.61 cheaper although postage would have made it £1.39 dearer - actually thinking about it £1.39 would be about what P&P would cost for it (still probably with a mark up given business postage rates) which would imply that the web prices are artifically low and made up by an excessive P&P charge

An interloper made it onto a certain Southern layout at the Doncaster show on Saturday...

post-7152-0-66893600-1329002661.jpg

The "excuse" for the appearance on the layout was that the turntable at the Great Westen shed was broken so it was sent along to the Southern shed for turning.

Thanks to the layout owner for allowing me to place my "little" project on his fine layout.

enjoyed the show yesterday, a few years since I have been and liked the larger isles than what I had experienced before and the less crowded feel. Got some bargains - Dapol 67 for £40, and silver bullets for a tenner each, so was very happy. One point which did spoil it but I see at a lot of shows is please watch out forthe younger children - I lost count the amount of times my 6 yr old who is train mad was knocked and pushed out of the way when all he was doing was watching the trains go by and wasnt in the way of the older dare I call them model railway enthusiasts who just had to be in that spot no matter what.

Just got back from Donny and I have to say I won't be rushing back unless I need to buy something. My view for what it is worth was far to many trade to layout ratio had to go looking for the layouts. I love to see trade at exhibitions but I like to see the equal amount of layouts. I personally won't be looking forward to next years show which is a shame.

The exhibition reminded me of the BRM magazine far to much trade and not enough on layouts.

All of the above is said knowing that costs are going up and the traders contribute to the show but more layouts please.

I have to agree with those that were disappointed with the exhibition this year. I also thought that the layouts were lost amongst the trade stalls, some of which gave the show a rather tatty appearance. I would also say that many of the layouts are already familiar on the exhibition circuit and that I didn't notice any P4 or S4 layouts and only one EM, 'Cornwallis Yard'. My friend felt the same way and he also comented on the amount of layouts being operated by hand, something I heard others commenting about. I liked the idea of a layout in a shed and that it used many proprietry items showing what is acheivable in realistic terms. I also managed to avoid the over zealous cafeteria Gestapo this year unless someone has had a word with them to 'chill out'.

Rails, Motor Books and Langley were conspicuous by their absence as were other big traders.

I enjoyed Donny from a Trader's Assistant (Tea Boy) point of view. Good to talk to folk. Especially enjoyed the discussions on the joys of getting coach details correct for the appropriate era etc.

Apologies to anyone if I muddled your change; collar me next time!!

There was a bit of a 'shortage' of layouts in my opinion and this is a shame as the Donny show attracts a lot of local visitors (rather than modellers).

I thought the 7mm Depot from 'over the border' was excellent, with a jaw dropping selection of superb loco's. However, though the Diesels' sound was fantastic (and the 47 with exhaust - wow), the A4 sounded a bit like it had asthma (sorry lads); looked really beautiful though.

My wallet has survived as I didn't have that much time to succumb to the temptations of the well organised box shifters from Kent & Cambridgeshire.

Cheers P.

Interesting to read the comments here as just returned from my first time exhibiting at Doncaster. My layout is Thorpe Road, 1960's TT gauge.

We certainly experienced some problems with the temperature change from freezing over Friday night to getting warm on Saturday. Had several track joints close up and develop into trains moving when the section they were on was supposed to be switched off! Did get it sorted fairly quickly when realised what was happening. Also affected the running of several locos which are normally reliable, but there again they are all over 45 years old!

Regarding how the layouts are chosen, I gave details of my layout to Warner's at their stand at Ally Pally in 2009 and was invited for this year at both Doncaster and Peterborough.

I realise that my layout is not 'scale' and probably will never feature on anyone's best layout list, but it was built to show where our hobby was in the 1960's for the average modeller. After this weekend I now have a couple of locos and stock to repair and a list of jobs that need attending to. Overall, we had fun, and that what it is all about.

A little belated, for which I apologise, but the BRM team and the Exhibitions crew would like to thank to all who braved the weekend's arctic weather conditions to attend; exhibitors, traders and visitors and of course the Doncaster and District Model Railway Club. We had a great weekend and enjoyed ourselves immensely!

Doncaster was my first trip to a show 'over the wall' in many years and my first visit to an English show from behind the backscene (St Marnock). A big thank you must be said to the staff at BRM/Warners and the staff at Doncaster Racecourse for their hospitality and helpfulness!
