London's East End Railways Part 1, by D. Brennand

Picked this up today after Grahame Wareham (Brush Veteran) drew it to my attention. A book filled with plenty of useful photographs featuring the historic nostalgia of the railways around East London. An absolute must for those with an interest in the GE routes around East London. Some of the photo's are very old/pre-grouping period. There are also some good shots of steam and diesel traction working around the East End.

BD, is there much in the way of the line to Dalston Jct from Broad Street, and particularly Bishopsgate and Spitalfields in their freight-only period? The area between Wapping and Shoreditch fascinates me having spent three years working there on the new ELL

Who has it in stock BD?

Don't go mad I meant someone who'd ship to the 'States.....

Hi Pete

Does Amazon work like this for US residents? Here in France we have amazon.fr, but ordering stuff from amazon.co.uk works fine - even though it is often cheaper than the French version, even after postage etc. Worth a look, maybe?

It doesn't cover the North London Railway in this volume. It covers Liverpool Street, Stratford, Ilford and Temple Mills Yard, plus whats in between. Bishopsgate Goods Depot is in there.

Pete - the book has a print run of just 1500 so I'm not sure if it's going to make it to Amazon. I've got a copy of this coming from Bob Pearman (specialist in music and transportation books...your kind of guy!) - and he ships worldwide.

I would but you can't physically order this book from that site! Try it. It is not in the "buy it now" category.......

Best, Pete.

Give him a call, Pete. Bob's a decent chap to deal with and I'm sure he would be more than happy sell you a copy and ship it out to the 'big apple'.

I would echo BD's comments here and yes I did drag him to the Book Law stand so he could buy one. I think it one of the best I have seen which encompasses most of the modelling periods and provides some suprisingly rare archive photos. Apparently the author, an ex.Stratford railwayman, is working on two more volumes, well done Book Law.

I'm sure Book Law would ship to the 'States.

Has Jim got another book out from "Shenfield to Ipswich" or something like that???????

Or am I mixing him up with D. Brennan???

Best, Pete.

Jim stays within the boundaries of Greater London, as that is his speciality as a Railway Historian. There may be (an)other book(s) in the series published by Middleton Press.

Unfortunately it is not listed on the Book Law site either...........I'll sit on my hands for a couple of days.

Best, Pete.

Yes it is ! Click here

Book Law do not deal with Amazon ! Book Law are the publishers and they are also retailers, so give them a ring or send them an e-mail and they'll tell you about shipping charges to the US.

Just wanted to report that I got my copy from the hugely helpful "Book Law" just before Christmas. What a wonderful book this is. Superb photos included, many I have never seen before.

It is about time that this subject matter was treated so well by publishers. Looking forward already to Part 2.

Best, Pete.
