Network Rail & Oxford van modifications

I posted the pics of my mods to the earlier Cararama transits before but I decided to have a go at the new Oxford transit too.

Here's the van straight out of the box, watch the wing mirrors I lost one and snapped the other one with over enthusiastic sawing!

nice and easy to split it into it's constituent parts, just two screws.

turn the wheels to make it a bit different and secure the axle with glue.

Clamp it nice and firm with the mirrors hanging over the edge of the board, paper towels protecting the paint work. Start cutting carefully with a fine saw.

Two nice slots up to the rain gutter

Score along the top with an older blade to help it snap where we want it to, three passes was sufficient.

Paper towels protecting the paint and gently snap it off, making sure the point of the pliers is near the scored line .

I moved the bulkhead back behind the crew seats like in some of our S&T's vans, some have a table too. The Driver is from the Bachmann P-way set.

Glue the door on and touch up the edges with white paint, I'm going to add a sill from plastic and some interior details too to hide the fact the other window is actually solid on the inside. The open door is obviously tinted glass!!!!

Are you going to paint the dashboard and seats? Transit dashboards are a satin finish dark grey or black and the seats are usually a slightly lighter shade of grey but far darker than those on the model. For seat belts I have used strips of notepaper (0.5 to 0.8 mm wide) 'coloured' with a marker pen and fixed with a dab of dilute PVA, but make sure the sides are parallel.

Yes I'll be painting and detailing the interior with some Hi vi jackets etc too. Lots of bits and testing kit piled up in the back as well. The simple assembly makes it easy to do this a bit at a time. :)

I saw a crew van pass me today, and the three things that stuck out were the Ventilator on the roof, the rear facing spotlamp on the back left corner of the roof, and the large yellow step board at the back.

Worth pondering on I think.

The ventilator seems to be standard but I've not seen the step, that must neon the latest ones only. I've only got pics of one of our S&T ones and there were differences between the fit on these to the p-way ones before so this might be the reason for the step as the items in their vans tend to be heavier.

All 3 added to mine.

I thought I'd just add some pics of another conversion as thanks for several trips to Leaford.

This shows how I do the doors.

Same principle as the side door, two careful cuts and then snapped on the cast top line of the door.

First rough cut from the donor van

Now to file down the door before I cut out the opening, just in case I wreck the window frame ;)

I've modified the seat insert too to see the footwell with the door open and cut out the boss in the cargo space.

Looking good so far, but far too old to be with Network Rail !

Rough cut out of the door, I used to drill multiple holes then join them up with cutters but now I use a 'nibbler' that chops out small rectangular bites. A lot quicker and less prone to damaging the paint

Neaten up with files and sanding mini drum. The wheels were pulled off and and the ends of the axles bent to turn the wheels.

I've spliced in some plasticard to support the doors and painted it as plywood, often cladding the interiors from ones I've hired.
