RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 15, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2012 done a bit more to the shed this evening, been having trouble getting the roof to curve sucessuflly and at the same time be strong, in the end i just gave up and decided to score the roof to create the curve if you get what i mean i first cut down the 30 thou plasticard to the width i wanted (or so i thought) scored 4 lines along it and bent into shape, any tears in the score were treated to plastic bond next up i used a bit of basic geometry to cut some existing curved strengtheners so they had straight edges for the roof to fix to,, i think i may well cut another couple to strengthen it a bit more as it is bowing out slightly between the existing cross members as can be seen in the pictures then i added a few plasticard strips across the top of the roof, mainly because the roof is actually 2 pieces of plasticard bonded together and i needed to hide the join top of roof underside with the central cross member, gonna add 2 more to stop it bowing out join between the plasticard sheets added a lip to the building for the roof to sit on again using basic geometry i cut an end facia board fitted in place then i moved away from the roof and i added the "porch" to the rear of the building which will link the building with the Hornby bridge, a simple construction, angle plastistruct to attach it to the main shell, curved roof to match the rest of the building and wide enough to fit between the bridge parapets i was going to finish there but i decided to carry on cladding the rest of the building, an hour or so later here is the result added some "drainpipes" under the eaves of the building, mainly to disguise the joins between the wills sheets rear of the building with the porch on show, i know there is a lack of windows but i felt it wasn't worth the hassle of cutting them in when the layout will only be viewed from the front quickly placed on the layout and a photo taken with flash but i think its starting to look the part now the porch link doing its job
RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 18, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 18, 2012 cracked on with a bit more of the layout today, as you can probably tell i dont seem to stay on one part of the layout for long before getting bored and starting something else, anyway today was the final bit of track laying... all i needed to do was to fit the peco inspection pits in the shed and the rails running to and from them and that job would be complete, marked out the position of the pits, drilled a pilot hole then cut the grooves out with my jigsaw positioned the pits then fitted the tracks leading up to them and from them with the shed in place roof fitted inside the shed, gonna detail it when im ready 165 and 67 trying it for size so that was it for the shed, next up i decided to start on the platforms, starting with the one nearest the yard, i have used peco "concrete" platform edges, wills "rendered cement" sheets and plasticard, simple construction, about an hours work to get to what you see here the rear platform wall on the yard side is also the "retaining wall" for the high level sidings so it was just a case of deciding how tall i wanted the wall to be and cutting the plasticard to that height plus the platform height, it has ended up 35mm high, 15mm platform a height and 20mm for the wall here is the underside of the platfrom with plasticard cross members for strength top side with the wills rendered concrete for platform tops, 35mm wide too closer look i have put some brick card on the outside of the wall (yard side) slightly deeper than the height of the visible part of the wall so i can butt it up ready painted when im ready platform in place closer look on the platform side im going to paint the brick card away from the platform and fix it in place when im ready, save a lot of effort masking up etc but here is the card placed against the wall to get an idea of how it will look i've got to get some more packs of the wills sheets to complete the platform n that side before doing it all again on the other side!! another productive day
RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 20, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 20, 2012 Finished the first platform last night (bar the painting) Just over 6ft long Just got the other side to do now, ive painted a strip of brick card something like bluebrick colour, gonna wait til its dry and then will ask opinions as to whether it looks right before i carry on painting the rest

RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 26, 2012 i thought i'd do something different with the shed, plus its cheaper! ive got a plan with the 2 platform, im going to add a 3rd platform face to it and add a single independant line coming from the wooden backscene (as if coming from under/inside a building) which will be for either a tram or my prefered choice a parry people mover (once another forum member gets his 3d printed one scaled up from N to OO!) hopefully i can crack on with stuff again after monday as my wife and kids are going away on holiday
rob D2
Looking good. That 67 looks nice on the stock in the platform. Will you be having any of the chiltern oddities - bubble cars, class 118 or aylesbury style shunter ?
St. Simon
Hi, I love the depot building Jim, you've certainly captured the look of Wembley very well, I particularly like the curved roof! Your re-spaced steel track looks quite realistic with the grey ballast! Keep up the good work! Simon
RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 26, 2012 Looking good. That 67 looks nice on the stock in the platform. Will you be having any of the chiltern oddities - bubble cars, class 118 or aylesbury style shunter ? ive got a sound chipped chiltern bubble, the depot shunter is a sound chipped NSE 03 for a bit of variety! not going to bother with the sandite dmu (yet)
RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 27, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 27, 2012 so what do we think of this colour for engineers brick? going to give it a very watery white wash to colour between the bricks. started on the 2nd platform too, couple of bits to add to the near end and 1 piece at the far end (need 1 more pack of will cement render), couple of pics taken with a flash as the light had almost gone when i'd finished the right hand platform will (possibly) have an independant line coming from the wooden back scene as far as the white plasticard piece for a people mover service i will get better pictures tomorrow
RMweb Gold big jim Posted July 30, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 30, 2012 operation "the wife and kids are away for a week" has begun! first up today i continued to build the 2nd platform, unfortunatly i am 1 pack of wills render short so will have to finish it tomorrow when i get some i eluded to in the previous post that i wanted to add an independent platform to the rear of the platform for a people carrier service, willj is developing one in 4mm so i will be getting one once its available the platform is only going to be a single carriage long (i could also get a 153 in there), the line will come in from behind the wall from inside the backscene you can see where ive put the platform edging in this picture, ive yet to add somesort of incline to baseboard level, nearet the camera is where the extra sheets of wills render will be added to make a platform concourse a closer look at the people mover platform finally today i primed the finished platform and shed

RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 5, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 5, 2012 well today was the final day of the family not being home so i decided to have a final big push of finishing bits and bobs and starting others after another trip to trident trains in dagfields for yet more wills cement render sheets as well as a bit more plasticard, paint and a ratio fuel tank kit, wanted the knightwing one but richard didnt have one first up was making a retaining wall for the incline for the yard, decided to do it stepped using an offcut of plasticard and some evergreen box section here is it in place then i added some brick card and cut down and refitted with the brick card added then i finished the platform by adding the final pieces of wills cement render.... to the end and the concourse area then i primed it and the retaining wall while i waited for htat to dry i gave the shed a coat of blue, really not sure about this, may well redo it beige, abviously ive not painted the brickwork yet, so i will see how it looks once there is a contrasting colour, at the minute it looks too much!! back to the platform, i gave it a coat of sleeper grime all over, as i put it on i thought, no, looks wrong, so i quickly tried to rub it off with kitchen roll, however as i rubbed it away i realised it actually looked quite good so i let it dry and here is the result i painted the platform edges with railmatch concrete happy with the result on that platform i did the same with the other side very happy with it.... and so to the yard.... first up i glued down some wills troughing at the end of the sidings, i will add shore supply boxes at the end of the run next up was the knightwing fuelling plant... here is where it is going built up and primed sleeper grimed again (still wet) much better dry next up i built a bund for the ratio fuel tanks i got from dagfields, i also added a piece of box section to the rear of the tanks after looking at the prototype pics of buxton depot, to increase the angle added brick card and primed it up and so indoors as the light was failing, definatly couldnt get away with this if the kids were home fuel tanks first, sleeper grimed again!! painted the tanks brown and the wall a brick colour, thing is they look the same!! finally painted up the bits and bobs on the 2 fuelling plants, the canopies are "jarvis black", a'la fastline 56 and the various bits and bobs are either wood or metal coloured using various humbrol colours, i have since added varnish to the base to make it look wet, will have to see how it looks tomorrow once dry as you can see a productive day again

St. Simon
Hi Jim, Looks really good so far, if you want a different Blue for the Depot building, I found that the Revell Aquacolour Aqua Marine is a good match to the colour of Aylesbury Depot. I do like the stepped embankment, nicely done! In the Sidings and Depot, are you going to put all the walkway lights like they have at Wembley and Moor Street? I'd would look really good if you did! Keep it up, your doing a grand job! Simon
RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 13, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 13, 2012 had an hour free time the other day so i got on with a few more bits and bobs, carried on with a few more retaining walls and repainted the shed. first up i checked on how the varnish on the fuel plant bases looked, come out well recon i then cut down some plasticard to make the outer retaining wall, same inner height as the station side, will use plastistrip box to make the pillars on the outside other retaining wall for behind the shed, im only going to paint this rather than add brick paper the whole length as it will be out of sight apart from about 5cm at the end i have also make another stepped embankment wall for the other side of the mainline, this one however is going to be a newer concrete sectional type in place and painted finally got to use my iwata airbrush and spray booth for the first time, i painted up the brick card so i can simply cut it to the size i need and touch up the edges as i need to last up i reprimed the shed so i can repaint it, probably going to be beige, i have got some southeastern finescale "modern steel cladding" sheets to use on the roof, in fact im going to redo the roof i have already made using it as it looks perfect
Guest
Wow Jim coming along really nicely. This is turning out to be a really, really nice layout. Well done. I have been following it since the very beginning when it was just a mere baseboard... Once again, well done mate and good luck for the future! RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 19, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2012 had a couple of hours on the layout again today, had a little bit of help from the smallest child hence the thomas stuff in the pics! first up i finished the main roof on the shed using the southeasten finecast "modern box profile steel" plastic sheet i started by making 3 roof formers which i joined and braced with plasticard, i also added box section between the formers for the plastic sheet to bond to top side and in place similarly i redid the long shed roof with the box section sheets, unfortunatly ive run out of box section so i need to grab a piece of it tomorrow so i can fix the 2nd sheet of box section to the roof next up i built the outer retaining wall, again using plasticard, i added the prepainted bricksheet to it as i went along, im going to add columns to the outer side of the wall soon too then i built the road access ramp, again plasticard with the brickcard added as i went along the last thing i did was to build a basic shore supply box for the sidings, looks ok so i'll build a few more and paint them orange or yellow
RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2012 another sneaky hour earlier, did a bit more to the walls etc added some pillars to the main wall, cement rendered looking, obviously they need weathering and coping stones adding, ive also added plasticard strip to the wall top, painted cement colour too i then made a wills fence for the back of the platform plonked in place to see how it looks got 2 more packs to make up, im going to paint it black, i thought off adding it as the "engines" of the stabled units would be head height to passengers on the platform which in real life would probably not happen next up i started on the sidings walkways, got a stack of this stuff from modelzone reduced to £1 cut it into two tiles/slab widths in place.... being as the sheet is quite thin i was a bit bothered that when i ballast the walkways would get "lost" in the ballast so i added sides to he walkways with plastic strip you can see the difference between the built up piece and normal strip here got a few mornings i can carry on with the layout coming up this week, hopefully going to get the walkways finished then ive got a pair of knightwing portacabins to build for the fuel plant, maybe be in a position to ballast the yard

RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 27, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2012 bit more done this morning first up i finished building up the walkways and glued them into place then i made a hardstanding for the portacabins and fuelling point area painted it cement colour going to put the cabins side by side, made them up ready to paint before i add the legs, glazing etc finally a walkway between the sidings and the shed, not built up this lot like the siding area, its mainly there to get division between the track and car park area, something to ballast up against
RMweb Gold big jim Posted September 1, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 1, 2012 another big push.... i painted the shed the other night, did it white and painted the downpipes blue and once i finished it i realised it was a proper dogs dinner, even the brick colour came out all wrong! anyway once it was dry i decided to repaint it using humbrol 22, it looks cream on the tin but its gone on ever so slightly green which looks ok put some tiles down in the office and added a rear wall and onto this morning..... the shed in place first up i added brick card to the rear of retaining wall i then populated the sidings to check if the sets would fit into the sidings with the buffer stops fitted, the mainline set is quite tight but it just goes in the long siding! the 3 car set just fits in the shed siding looking good i then filled the sleeper gaps ready for ballasting and so to the ballasting did it in 2 halves, up as far as the points first, pva/water mix sprayed on and dry the 2nd half of ballasting, over the points, masked them off to stop ballast going in the switches while that was drying i added the brick card to the platform wall added the ratio wooden fencing to the top of the wall, still one section to add overall view finished the portacabins apart from the doors view of the "station overbridge" view from the portacabins i then added some "sidewalk" from the shed to the depot entrance, yet to be painted last up i sprayed the yard with sleeper grime, still a bit wet in this pic
