I won't be doing the Mk2 999550 with the NMT as I'm doing the all Mk3 version. I have previously modelled 999550 with a past incarnation of the NMT but that was sold on last year. I have plans to do 999550 again to accompany 977983 as part of "NMT2" - the set that regularly traverses the Southern Region.

Cheers,

Mick

Back to 975280.

A lick of paint, transfers from scalemodel transfers (not available anymore, but Railtec Models have carried on the mantle of departmental stuff)

And this is the end result.

post-408-0-96123400-1353540360_thumb.jpg

And a further update with 977983.

I cut a few pieces of 30 thou styrene and profiled them to fit inside the roof section.

post-408-0-12547700-1353540684_thumb.jpg

They were glued in and vertical side sections also added to form the outer section of the roof well.

post-408-0-16513000-1353540511_thumb.jpg

One toilet and one window have also been blanked with 30thou styrene and minimal filler.

post-408-0-58857500-1353540527_thumb.jpg

The floor of the roof well and work on the ends will be next.

Cheers,

Mick

How have you made the weights (I assume that's what they are in real life) for the barrier wagons ?

Sheets ?

I'd like to embark on a similar project.....

Regards

Nick

The open weight is a cut down 40' box - in fact I used the top half of the box, turned it upside down and then used strip styrene for the edging. I've still to decide what to use to represent the ballast weights that look like concrete blocks (and I've no idea how they're secured inside)

The low "solid" box is Evergreen sheet around a 40' base - that was actually the floor of the box used for the open.

Various bits of styrene added for the small panels and details. The infill is foamboard and a bit of filler to seal the joint.

Cheers,

Mick

Do you have any tips for doing the windows? I'm trying to do it on an Airfix mk2d for another project but having problems getting it right.

Do you have any tips for doing the windows? I'm trying to do it on an Airfix mk2d for another project but having problems getting it right.

Option one: File out the coach window corners to a square - this makes it easier to fit the blank

Option two: File the corners of the blank to fit the window.

Cut a blank of 30thou marginally larger than the window, then gradually file along the edges until it just begins to fit in the window - less is more. The file a slight chamfer along the edge - this matches the moulded "release angle" of the model, which is quite prominent on the Airfix/Dapol/Hornby Mk2.

Keep checking after each file stroke.

It should get to the point at which it just begins to sit flush with the body.

Now apply plastic solvent from the inside - I use plasticweld - and then gradually push the blank into the window.

If the chamfer is done correctly, it softens and allows the blank to "compress".

Use a bit more solvent to keep the edge soft and gently work the blank into place, using a number one finger to feel if the joint is as smooth as you can get it. The joint will stay soft for a while, allowing you to be really happy with it's position.

Then leave overnight to fully harden. Hopefully, only minimal filler/sanding will now be required - in some cases, it may take 2-3 gentle fill/sand/file to get right.

I'll be applying the first layer of primer on 977983 shortly to check my work.

The key word is patience.

I have few BSO's bought very cheaply - practice on one, but make sure you save a couple of doors for a DBSO conversion!

In the case of 977997 earlier in this thread, the window frames were retained and the blank was VERY carefully filed to shape, but fitted in exactly the same way.

Cheers,

Mick

http://www.flickr.co...819/7309702928/ they seem to be held down with a cable in this pic and if you look carefuly there is one cable that comes out the container and on to the flat wagon its self hope this helps ;-)

I think the cable may be some form of connection through to the unit. It is just visible at the far corner of the box.

Here's a clearer pic

Slow going with 977983 due to work/family/Warley.

The roof well is taking shape and the window blank first fill isn't too far off the mark.

A second skim has been done and the primer is drying as I type.

I've recently taken to not full paint stripping before chopping models, simply removing transfers and rubbing down any obvious steps between paint layers, however, I hadn't reckoned on the thickness of paint of the yellow stripe and grey band. More fibreglass brushing required.

The Gatex end cutouts have also been started. Pics soon

Mick

More detail in the roof well of 977983.

post-408-0-66977600-1354236009_thumb.jpg

I'm hoping to get more detail of the lower section soon. I've tracked down a CAD image on the net, but hope a photo will show more detail.

In the meantime, I've been reviewing/planning my current and future yellow/departmental fleet of coaches and locos. I've also been busy looking through my stash of aircon Mk2's with a view to possible projects.

My present model of the SGT is in the pre-2009 formation with t'n't 31105/975280/975081/460000/977985/31233. Probable plan is to replace 977985 with 9708 and add 99666 into the formation (I already have 99666). This will require a repaint of 460000 and addition of the dustbin sized laser unit on one end. 975081 will also receive a black roof section.

This will then free up 31105 to power a test train comprising 6264/999508/9714 (6264/999508 already done and 9714 now on the workbench). Alternative power could be my blue 31106 to break up the yellow if I don't make a move on the SGT.....)

975025 "Caroline", currently coupled up with 37423, with 37419 on standby.

RSC3 - 9481/5981/977997/1256 - already built - will have 47501/47712 as power - replacing the current "borrowed" DRS 37510/688.

NMT2 (the SR Mk2 based test train) compromising 997983/999550/6261 and either 977969 or 72613 - to be powered by a pair of 73's (probably 138/107).

NMT - Hornby HST and Mk3's with PHD etches is also on the to-do shelf

Although these could be completely turned upside down if the prototype test fleet changes (57/3 and Mk3 DVT's maybe!!!) or I get other ideas such as a yellow 37.

Cheers,

Mick

977983 awaiting roof detail, but work has started on more Mk2's. (With a longer term view to painting them all in one go.)

RTOV 9714 - Remote Train Operating Vehicle - more commonly known incorrectly as a DBSO (the brake is no longer fitted and it doesn't carry fare-paying passengers)

I am aware of Pete Harvey's kit, but as I'd previously built a RTOV (in my avatar) with "bits of plastic", I thought I'd give it another go.

The base model is an Airfix BSO - I grafted in side windows - kindly donated by an old BSO body that will give up yet more parts for this and other projects. (BSO's can be had for a fiver or less on a well known auction site)

post-408-0-30944000-1354566523_thumb.jpg

Next - a guard's door is chopped from the donor

post-408-0-20286100-1354566537_thumb.jpg

And the side window is removed from 9714 (this will recycled into 999550)

post-408-0-42009400-1354566557_thumb.jpg

To be replaced with the donated door section

post-408-0-21454300-1354566573_thumb.jpg

Fill/file/sand/fill/file/sand and this is the result so far (a layer of primer will highlight any gremlins)

post-408-0-66321400-1354566600_thumb.jpg

A couple of windows are blanked with 30 thou styrene sheet

post-408-0-76542600-1354566615_thumb.jpg

post-408-0-70332900-1354566627_thumb.jpg

After removing the raised detail on the former brake end, I used the corridor connection moulding as a template for a 10thou blank

post-408-0-93548500-1354566639_thumb.jpg

Looking like a ninja/SP cab-forward loco, I've used masking tape to approximate where the windows go and given it a quick dusting of white primer to see if it looks right.

post-408-0-52345900-1354566726_thumb.jpg

Only afterwards, did I realise that white primer on white plasticard doesn't show up too well - DOH!

As I made the various blanks for 9714, I've duplicated a set for the future 9708 to accompany the SGT.

The donor BSO will give up it's half-sized windows to be grafted into a TSO, to become HSTRC 999550. (This is on the bench to be stripped down)

The only other planned yellow coach in the short term is another generator - 6261 - utilising a Bachy Mk1 BG.

Cheers,

Mick

Nice work Mick. I like what your doing with the RTOV, I've been doing some ScotRail DBSO's but I've been using kits but chopping a doner looks to work really well. I just dont fancy trying to do the front.

This may sound strange but I sometimes find it a shame to start priming and painting as I like the evidence of the hard work being on display!

Hi Scott,

I know what you mean - one of my favourite pre-painting shots is of the SGT optical car here:

looking superb as ever Mick

Thanks Rob,

After removing the tape to discover white on white doesn't work, I remasked the central window for a overspray in grey.

post-408-0-55277800-1354645898_thumb.jpg

The first window is chain drilled with a 2mm drill.

post-408-0-76475500-1354645908_thumb.jpg

And then a scalpel and needle files used to create the basic shape.

post-408-0-22390000-1354645919_thumb.jpg

Then using a sharp knife and small diameter needle file, the corners are gradually formed

This is then repeated for the other two windows

post-408-0-55115300-1354645930_thumb.jpg

post-408-0-81771100-1354645945_thumb.jpg

I think the left window, when viewed from the front, needs a little bit more opening out on the lower left side, but I'll wait for a coat of primer to highlight this properly.

The roof has also been modified using the donor coach again. A Roevac ventilator is required over the drivers cab, this was cut out from the donor, edges cleaned up and then glued into place in a matching hole in the cab roof - this takes a bit of patience, gradually opening out the hole in the roof , until the new section is a good fit.

post-408-0-57777100-1354645959_thumb.jpg

At the non-driving end, one of the vents has been removed and another from the donor added on the centre line, inboard of the water tank hatch.

post-408-0-57919300-1354646353_thumb.jpg

Other roof detail will be the NRN pod, 2x GSM sharkfin aerials and the generator exhaust.

The above photos at 3-4x full size of the model, certainly show up any "blemishes", that aren't always that visible to the naked eye!

Cheers,

Mick

Both the RTOV and 977983 look good. I like your approach with window swapping and cutting on the RTOV. Don't forget about removing those big strap hinges on the doors :)

Cheers Tom, forgot about the hinges on these two. I've done it on previous Mk2's - see RSC3. (Waiting for the shed heater to do it's job and then I'll be on the case.)

Mick

A quick coat of primer on 9714 and the camera shows up a few small marks.

The joint between the corridor blank and body looks like a canyon!

A thin skim of filler should sort it out.

The double doors need a blank/grill for the generator.

Mick

Another fill/file, but not prime, as the next stage is carried out.

The marker light boxes are formed from thin strips of 60thou styrene, filed to a triangular shape to fit the bevel of the ends. A hole has been cut for the horns.

The "vanes" either side of the outer windows have been fixed, but not yet cut to length/shape.

The "eyebrows" are where the roof/end joint needs making a bit more prominent after removing the gutters. They will be filed down and filled on top edge to create a small step. (see bottom photo)

post-408-0-55106800-1354909770_thumb.jpg

A hole for the generator grille has also been cutout - this'll be filled by my favourite method of Evergreen 4031 clapboard.

post-408-0-93574200-1354909779_thumb.jpg

Hopefully will do the vanes and grille later tonight.

post-408-0-24214700-1354910273_thumb.jpg

I've decided to try and finish (or get very close to finishing) the bodies on 5-6 yellow coaches before doing a mass undeframe detailing session

Cheers,

Mick
