Various holes have now been cut into 975087.

The rectangular holes will be filled withe Evergreen clapboard to represent grilles

Now for the ugly part.

I laid the etched sides onto the body and marked in blue pen where I needed to cut away the plastic for the different window layout of the BTU vehicle.

post-408-0-13901900-1348434798_thumb.jpg

Then using a mini drill with suitable cutting tool, I opened out the holes in the body - this task doesn't need to be too pretty! I made sure that when I come round to fit the glazing, none of the existing body will be in the way.

Next stage will be glueing the sides on.

Cheers,

Mick

The etched sides are gently curved by using a rolling pin and a cloth! Lay the side face down on a couple of layers of tea towel on a hard surface, then roll across it to create the bodyside curve.

Then the sides are stuck to the body using my old favourite Evostik - other impact adhesives are available.

The thickness of the side means that the gutter strip isn't prominent anymore and could prove difficult for orange cantrail lining. I've added a very thin strip of styrene to "beef up" the gutter. I think I've used 15 x 30 thou Evergreen strip - but as I blagged the strip from my mate, I haven't got access to the packet!

A couple of door hinge lines were also filled in with filler - closer inspection of the prototype photos will show which ones are sealed, compared to the original incarnation of 975477 that the Hurst sides represent.

A coat of grey primer highlights any imperfections - and in this case, I don't need to clean anything up!

Roof vents and water filler pipes are also added.

Next will be the door handles and handrails.

Cheers,

The masking tape mystery can now be resolved.

post-408-0-21770000-1349114315_thumb.jpg

Apart from the BTU project, I've finally set to on a few repaint jobs.

A pair of DRS 57's - one was the Freightliner sound bargain, the other will be unpowered on a modified Lima chassis to partner it on a pair of FNA's.

DRS 37419 - to be used as a sub for 37423 on Caroline, or top n tail with a yellow 97/3 on a test train. Haven't decided which yellow tractor to do yet, but 97304 is favourite if I can get nameplates.

973xx - as above.

Not in the pic - a Hornby 56 may also be attacked with the airbrush as 56094 passed by me for the first time in Colas colours about 90 minutes ago and I just happen to have a suitable donor loco on the shelf.

Oops! I appear to have ordered some transfers from John Peck.............................

Cheers,

Mick

No real photo progress as I'm spending a couple of evenings applying orange cantrail stripes - and getting fed up of those also.

Planning what I'll take for a days's demo-ing at Manchester this Sunday. Most likely stuff from the above few pages.

Cheers,

Mick

Looking good Mick. There must be something in the air as I am working on a DRS 57, a 37419 and Colas 56s galore as well! Watch out for 56094 as I'm sure you are aware has a myriad of little detailing issues - aerials, headlights and buffers. PM me if you want the details.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers,

Andi.

Hi Andi - yes on the case with 094 - T and V aerial mounts etc. Just bought the correct cantrail grilles from Shawplan today.

Mick

Just been through and read this thread from the beginning. Most enjoyable and I will continue to watch with interest.

Thanks!

Here's the BTU having a quick test run this weekend on New Bryford along with the latest loco.

Handrails and underframe detail to add, along with a few paint details and it should make it's full debut on Blackmill at the Merseyside show in a couple of weekends.

That looks fantastic Mick! By far one of the best models I have seen this year! Might be down at Merseyside next weekend, 25/26 I think?

A 57 that may be altered a bit.............. :sungum:

These will be added to DRS 57009 - the bodyshell has had a few details trimmed off, such as the hinges, so that these can be fitted.

post-408-0-35629700-1350770609_thumb.jpg

Although the etch states 47 rad grilles - these "57/3 style" grilles have been fitted to 57004/009 as well as a few DRS Duffs

Cheers,

Mick
