Ian Fisher
I have been having a play round with a few mods on some of my airfix mkII's and found a chisel craft blade enough to move chop, chisel & slice out most of the fiitings with ease. I dont know why I thought they be harder to remove than they it actually turned out to be. I have done two buffer beams also, by cutting square across inner square section, which then just needs a fillet of strip and a new buffer beam from Souther pride and jobs a good un! Ian I've decided to try and finish (or get very close to finishing) the bodies on 5-6 yellow coaches before doing a mass undeframe detailing session Cheers, Mick

Ian Fisher
Staffordshire for the last year! Only damage to my car in six years Staffs/Derby.. But honestly a chisel blade takes care of the underfloor gubbins like nobodies! 999550 now thats a huge cut..shutn replace everything? RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 12, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2012 999550 now thats a huge cut..shutn replace everything? My donor BSO will provide all the 1/2 size windows I need............... A pair of TSO's arrived today. One will be 999550, the other will probably become a brake force runner - either 72612 or 72616. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 12, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2012 999550 now thats a huge cut..shutn replace everything? I've built 999550 before with Hurst etched sides - as seen in NMT use - these are were the two different sides: Whilst doing my usual www picture research, I've noticed that one side has had some of the previous half width windows altered to full width, actually making my cut n shut easier! This is what it looks like now. http://allanjenks.sm...v7sHt8&lb=1&s=A http://colsies-phots...C2zR5N&lb=1&s=A The plan is to blank out the full and half windows as required, cut out around the half window areas and add in a half-window that has been cut from the donor BSO. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 17, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2012 (edited) 999550 goes under the knife. One side needs some fairly major surgery to blank some windows and put some half-width ones in place The other side only needs a couple of window blanks More to follow. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 17, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2012 (edited) Small strips of 15thou styrene are attached to the inside of the body to provide support for the new sections The "new" windows are then cemented into place using Plastic Weld - the lower edges are aligned with a straight edge - horizontal position is measured from existing window spacing. The window sections have been donated by the same BSO body that provided parts for the RTOV/DBSO earlier in this thread. By supporting the windows with the styrene, it allows me to move them slightly until I'm happy with the position and then the whole thing is allowed to set overnight. It looks a bit untidy at this stage, but stay with me................ Cheers, Mick Edited December 17, 2012 by newbryford
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 18, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) I guess I should've made a better go at matching the infill sections to the holes in the body, but I left a few gaps! I only like using filler for small spaces, as it tends to shrink over time and the minimum amount of filler means the minimum shrinkage. So I used a few offcuts of plastic - mostly from the donor BSO - to fill the larger spaces. It still looks VERY untidy........ Letting it harden overnight before fill/file/sand. Then a layer of primer (cruelly) highlights the bits that I've missed. (I often use the photos to show me more than I can see with the naked eye) A bit more filling/filing required. Pics Later Cheers, Mick Edited December 18, 2012 by newbryford

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 19, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 19, 2012 I admire your patience Mick, and of course your confidence to hack away at stock. I cant even get basic weathering right! Cheers, Scott Thanks Scott. It's not always patience - I sometimes only get a few minutes at a time to do any modelling - that way I can do a glueing or filling job and know that when I get chance to get back to it, it'll most likely be set! At least I don't have to pack anything up, as I can leave it on my bench in the shed. Just like painting and weathering - practise hacking on cheap stuff. These Mk2's are great as they can often be had for a fiver - especially the BSO and FO. 999550 is about ready with the bodyside alterations. If anyone is wondering why there are four holes beside the door, 999550 carries an extra handrail. Roof detail will be next - '550 used to have a couple of conduits running virtually the full length of the roof, now it has various other aerials and attachments. A Bachy BG for conversion to generator 6261 is close to the bench, probably followed by brake force runner 72612 and maybe RSC1 977868. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2012 (edited) A Bachy BG for conversion to generator 6261 is close to the bench After a quiet day recovering from Mad Friday, I've managed to drag myself into the shed for an update. 6261 is a generator van in recent rebuilt condition - the inner pairs of doors are fully blanked out. Nothing special about this one (see further up the thread for a previous unrebuilt generator) The infilled windows are the usual piece of styrene/fill/file/sand. Due to the curved bodyside, I fit the styrene so that it protrudes from the body by a small amount - this is so that I can file it back to match the curve. One possibility is to refit the blanked windows - glued in permanently and filled around, but I find it can be difficult to get a smooth finish over such a large area if the window is the slightest bit recessed from the body. The existing door grooves can be a pain, as it takes a couple of fills/files to achieve a satisfactory finish - a quick tip is to run a knife or file down the groove to "key" it so the small amount of filler can take to the body. The main grilles are Evergreen 4031 clapboard - the existing window openings had the rounded corners "squared off" with a couple of strokes of a needle file. I've removed all the moulded roof vents and reduced the prominence of the roof ribs. The square holes are for the roof grilles, to be fitted later. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 26, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2012 A Bachy BG for conversion to generator 6261 is close to the bench, probably followed by brake force runner 72612 and maybe RSC1 977868. I decided to do two brake force runners - 72612 (ex Gatwick Express) and 977986 (ex-exhibition coach) 72612 has been made easier to model recently, as both gangways have been removed and the Gatex end cutouts plated over (Ta to RT for the up-to-date pic of the end I wasn't sure of). The main body job is to blank one toliet window. In this case I used a Lima aircon Mk2 as I had one lying around! Hoping that this is going to need an absolute minimum of fill/sand. 977986 is a different proposition as all windows are blanked. I removed the window frames with a curved blade and then squared the window corners to fit the blanks - this is easier than rounding the corners of the blanks. At this stage, the blanks need to be a good fit, but no problem if there are small gaps at the edges - but the smaller the gap, the less the filler. Looking like a boarded up pub: Coming up next in no particular order, will be roof/underframe/end detail for the few coaches above. (Unless I decide to do 9708.........)
